The right VPN for working from home depends first on whose network you need to reach. An employer’s approved remote-access system and a personal privacy VPN serve different purposes. Use the organization’s required client for company access. Consider a consumer subscription for permitted personal use or a clearly defined freelance workflow, after checking that it fits your device and does not conflict with work policy.

VPNBlade Editorial reviewed current provider documentation and remote-access guidance for this comparison. We have not measured these services in office calls, tested access to private company systems or conducted a comparative security assessment. The practical checks below are an evaluation plan for your own permitted setup.

Quick answer: separate work access from a personal subscription

Start with ExpressVPN if your approved personal setup needs documented desktop split-tunneling controls. Compare NordVPN if an administrator has specifically requested a dedicated public IP and its supported protocol limits fit the requirement. Compare Surfshark’s separately purchased Dedicated IP when you want to evaluate another fixed-address route. These are feature-based starting points, not claims that a consumer product can replace your company’s access gateway.

If IT already supplies everything you need, another subscription may add cost and connection complexity. Before buying, ask whether you may install a personal VPN on that device, whether it may run alongside work software, and which applications are allowed to use it. Do not interpret a working connection as permission to change a managed computer.

Compare the documented features that affect a home office

Provider Useful feature to investigate Main limitation to check Decision question
ExpressVPN Desktop split tunneling for selecting which applications or destinations follow the VPN route. Availability and behavior depend on platform and current app version. Do you need an authorized routing exception, rather than another full-device route?
NordVPN A purchased dedicated IP with documented protocol-dependent connection capacity. The dedicated-IP allowance differs between OpenVPN and NordLynx; IKEv2 is excluded. Has the service administrator approved this fixed public address and protocol?
Surfshark A Dedicated IP add-on documented for desktop and mobile apps. It is purchased separately from bundles, with one Dedicated IP per account. Will the extra fixed-address cost solve a requirement you actually have?

ExpressVPN: investigate routing controls for an approved personal setup

ExpressVPN documents split-tunneling options on supported desktop platforms. Its current instructions describe choosing apps that use or bypass the VPN, and its Mac guidance includes destination controls. That gives you specific behavior to inspect when a personal VPN needs to coexist with ordinary internet applications. Check the installed platform’s instructions rather than copying an exception from another operating system.

Why choose this route? It may fit someone who wants to manage a permitted personal application’s route while keeping another application outside that tunnel. First establish whether the employer allows the arrangement. A routing control is not permission to bypass an organization’s security policy, and excluding traffic means that traffic does not use that VPN route.

  • Pros: documented app-routing choices and platform-specific setup guidance; useful questions to ask before committing to a long subscription.
  • Cons: routing exceptions can become confusing, especially with a second managed client; platform support needs a current check and this guide establishes no call-quality advantage.

Read our split-tunneling explanation before making an allowed exception. Compare the initial term and renewal in the ExpressVPN store. A service offer does not include company-network access or an administrator’s approval.

NordVPN: check dedicated-IP capacity before buying an add-on

NordVPN documents a dedicated IP as an address assigned to its purchaser rather than shared with other VPN users. Its support page lists up to ten simultaneous dedicated-IP connections using OpenVPN, but one using NordLynx, and says the feature is unavailable over IKEv2. Those differences matter when a laptop and phone must use the same approved exit address at once.

Why choose this route? Investigate it when the administrator of a service you use has requested an approved fixed public IP. Ask that administrator what protocol and access rules are acceptable before purchasing. Possessing the address does not grant access by itself; account permissions, authentication and the service’s own configuration remain separate.

  • Pros: documented protocol and concurrency distinctions make it possible to compare an actual fixed-address requirement.
  • Cons: dedicated-IP capacity is not interchangeable across protocols; a fixed exit address is not an anonymity promise, and buying the add-on without a defined need may waste money.

Our IP-address guide explains why public routing and identity are different. The NordVPN store shows current service offers. Verify whether a specific offer includes the required add-on rather than assuming it from the provider name.

Surfshark: compare the separate Dedicated IP purchase

Surfshark’s support documentation lists Dedicated IP support for its Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS applications and browser extension, with a manual-configuration route also documented. It states that Dedicated IP is not included in its bundles and must be purchased separately, with one Dedicated IP available per account. Check that cost and restriction against the exact setup you want.

Why choose this route? It is another option to investigate for an administrator-approved fixed exit address across supported devices. Compare the current operating-system and protocol instructions with the service’s requirements. Do not treat a provider’s advertised convenience benefits as a guarantee that a work portal will accept the connection.

  • Pros: the documentation makes the separate purchase and supported application families explicit.
  • Cons: a base subscription alone does not establish Dedicated IP entitlement; one address per account may not fit a workflow that needs multiple independent fixed addresses.

Use the Surfshark store to compare the full commitment and confirm add-on inclusion at checkout. Choose the package for its relevant features, rather than buying extra security products simply because a larger bundle is promoted.

Build a home-office connection worksheet

Write down four things: the device you control, the applications you need, who administers access, and what problem the VPN is meant to solve. A freelancer using ordinary cloud services has different requirements from an employee connecting to a private company network. A household router route also differs from a client installed on a laptop that leaves home.

NIST’s telework guidance treats remote access as a system involving client devices, access technologies and organizational policy. That is a useful way to assess a purchase: ask what the subscription changes and what it leaves to the employer, operating system or application. A commercial VPN alone does not create managed devices, user-access controls or a complete business security program.

For device-specific comparisons, see our Windows guide and Mac guide. If several household devices need an approved shared route, inspect the router comparison and its compatibility limits. Buying a service does not add missing VPN-client features to a router.

Evaluate calls, uploads and reconnection with ordinary tasks

Choose a permitted test period and use non-sensitive material. Note the device, app version, connection type and selected location. Then try the tasks that determine whether you can work: joining a call, uploading a representative file, opening an authorized cloud application and reconnecting after sleep. Record failures separately instead of treating a fast download test as proof that every task works well.

A call with good picture quality can still have noticeable delay, and a file upload can expose a different bottleneck from downloading. If Ethernet works better than Wi-Fi on the same computer, investigate the underlying network before declaring a provider the winner. Our VPN route explanation covers why distance, processing and congestion can affect results. We do not turn this evaluation plan into invented benchmark scores.

Keep overlapping clients and local devices understandable

A printer, local file server or work application may depend on a route that differs from ordinary web browsing. Before changing split tunneling or local-network access settings, determine what the application needs and whether the change is authorized. Record the original setting so an unsuccessful adjustment can be reversed.

When a managed client stops connecting, contact the organization’s support team with the exact failure stage. The troubleshooting guide includes Cisco-specific diagnostics and distinguishes a certificate or account problem from a failed internet connection. Installing a consumer VPN in response can add another variable while leaving the original access problem unresolved.

Use the right security layer for the problem

A VPN does not make a phishing page trustworthy or prevent someone from giving away a password. The FTC’s current public-Wi-Fi guidance explains that widespread HTTPS encryption protects website connections, while fake encrypted websites can still steal information submitted to them. Keep trusted application access, account protection and device updates in the decision rather than buying from a claim that every home connection is unsafe without a VPN.

Use your organization’s required authentication and software-update process. For personal accounts, use strong unique passwords and available multifactor authentication. A dedicated IP, malware filter or commercial bundle should be assessed as a specific feature, not a substitute for those controls.

Compare the full bill with the period you need

A low monthly equivalent can require a long upfront payment. Compare that initial invoice, the included term, renewal and any separate fixed-IP charge. If the project lasts a few weeks, a short plan may be financially more appropriate even when its monthly rate is higher. Save the cancellation and refund conditions for the purchase channel you use.

Before paying, you should be able to explain the required feature, the supported device, the approved route and the real initial commitment. If you cannot, clarify the workflow first. An employer-provided access system that already meets the requirement can be a reason to buy nothing.

Compare personal privacy with managed business access

A personal VPN purchase and an organization-managed connection answer different questions. For work resources, identify who grants permission, which systems the worker needs and who maintains the access arrangement. A consumer subscription cannot supply missing organizational membership.

The dedicated NordVPN versus NordLayer comparison covers identity, gateways, administration, privacy trade-offs, pros and cons, and separate buying requirements. Use that page for the provider choice while keeping this guide focused on the wider work-from-home setup.

Our remote-access setup guide develops the organizational workflow. Personal offers on this page remain consumer-plan information, separate from a business quote or employer approval.
