To turn off a personal VPN temporarily, start with its own app’s Disconnect or Pause control, then check the reported connection state. Disconnecting, deleting a VPN profile, uninstalling an app and cancelling a subscription are different actions. Choose the smallest change that matches your task.
This guide consolidates VPNBlade’s archived multi-device disable-VPN article and iPad instructions. It replaces obsolete screen descriptions and blanket warnings with a practical workflow for personal devices. If an employer or school manages the connection, ask its administrator before changing a required configuration.
Choose the action you actually need
| Your goal | Action to investigate | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Test one connection without the tunnel | Disconnect or use a documented temporary pause | It does not cancel recurring billing. |
| Stop automatic reconnection | Review the app’s automatic connection rule or applicable device setting | Closing its window may not change that rule. |
| Remove a service from the device | Follow the vendor’s uninstall and profile-removal instructions | It does not necessarily remove the account or subscription. |
| Stop future charges | Use the provider or purchase channel’s cancellation process | Deleting the app is not a cancellation request. |
Record why you are changing the connection and how you will restore it. For a troubleshooting experiment, close unrelated sensitive tasks and change one setting at a time. That makes the result more informative than simultaneously disconnecting, uninstalling and resetting the network.
Start with the VPN app on any platform
Open the application responsible for the connection and look for its documented Disconnect or Pause action. Check what a pause means for that particular app: it may be temporary, network-specific or followed by automatic reconnection. Do not assume that closing the app’s visible window stops its background networking component.
After using the control, inspect the app’s status and the device’s relevant VPN indication. If the app reconnects immediately, look for an automatic rule rather than repeatedly pressing the same button. Keep the provider’s instructions open on a trusted route so you can recover the previous configuration.
For a connection problem, first decide whether the symptom concerns every app or only one destination. Our VPN troubleshooting guide helps separate access-network, tunnel and destination failures. A successful website visit after disconnection is useful evidence about that experiment, but not a complete explanation of the original fault.

Windows: distinguish the provider app from a Windows profile
A commercial VPN app can manage its own connection, while a Windows VPN profile has a separate system interface. Microsoft’s current Windows instructions describe the VPN section under Network & internet and the quick-settings controls for configured connections. Check which connection is actually in use before changing a profile.
If the connection belongs to your provider’s app, use its supported disconnect process first. If you use a Windows-managed profile, find the identified connection in the VPN settings and use the applicable off or disconnect control. Do not delete its server details merely to perform a temporary comparison.
When a profile was supplied by an organization, retain its settings and contact support if the expected control is unavailable. The consumer app you installed later may not be responsible for that connection. Our Windows guide covers the wider app-support and feature questions.
iPhone and iPad: check the app, then the owner of the setting
Use the personal VPN app’s documented disconnect control first. If an unexpected VPN indication remains, identify the relevant configuration in Settings rather than deleting every profile you can find. Apple’s networking guidance recommends checking VPN and related security software and searching Settings for VPN, profile and filter entries.
For an iPad, the same diagnostic principle applies: find the app or profile that owns the connection, understand any automatic rule and verify the resulting state. Different software versions and providers can expose different controls. An old screenshot from an archived tutorial is not sufficient evidence that a current device must have the same menu.
A managed profile can configure more than the VPN. Do not remove one simply to make an icon disappear. If you intend a permanent removal from a personal iPhone, use our separate VPN removal guide. If you only want another server or app, use the iPhone VPN-change workflow. Those are separate tasks from a temporary disconnect.
Android: disconnect and always-on are separate settings
Google’s Android instructions describe finding VPN under Network & internet, opening the settings beside the relevant connection and turning it off to disconnect. They also distinguish forgetting a saved network and changing always-on behavior. Device manufacturers and Android versions may present the controls differently; searching Settings for VPN can help locate them.
Before changing an always-on setting, understand why it exists and whether the device is managed. A required configuration may block ordinary traffic when the tunnel is unavailable. That is a different outcome from an optional personal connection returning to its usual route.
For a more detailed Android-specific workflow, follow our Android disconnect guide. Keep the multi-device checklist here as an overview rather than assuming the same labels exist on every phone.
Mac: identify the active networking component
Start in the VPN app that established the connection. Apple also recommends checking relevant software and searching System Settings for VPN, profiles, firewall and filter settings when investigating connectivity. A background component or another configured service can explain why changing one visible app does not produce the expected result.
On a personal Mac, review only the setting relevant to your task and retain a path back to the previous configuration. A configuration supplied by your organization should be handled with its administrator. Avoid following old instructions to remove unrelated profiles or disable a firewall simply because a VPN appears in the symptoms.
What if it keeps reconnecting?
Write down when reconnection occurs: immediately, after the screen locks, when a particular app opens or when the network changes. That pattern is more useful to support than saying the VPN “will not turn off.” Check the matching automatic rule in the vendor’s current documentation.
A kill switch controls connectivity when the intended tunnel is unavailable; it is not interchangeable with an automatic connection rule. Likewise, a split-tunneling exception changes the route for selected traffic without necessarily disconnecting the VPN for everything else. Choose deliberately rather than combining controls at random.
If the setup is unclear, restore your earlier state and ask the appropriate support team. Supply the app and operating-system versions, the connection name and the observed sequence. Redact credentials and private server information before sharing screenshots.
Check the result and the billing separately
A fresh public-address check can help describe the browser’s route, but does not prove what every application is doing. Keep the limited observation with your original purpose. Reconnect when the temporary experiment is finished and check that your intended apps still work.
If your real aim is to leave the service, use the purchase channel’s cancellation process and retain its confirmation. Check any refund request separately. Our billing guide explains why a monthly equivalent, service duration and renewal charge are different figures.
If you are changing providers rather than simply disconnecting, compare the required app features before buying again. The dated offers below are options, not a requirement to replace a service just because one connection failed.
