Quick answer: check what the extension actually controls
A VPN browser extension can provide a browser-only proxy connection or act as a controller for a desktop VPN app. Those are different arrangements. Choose the one that covers your task, and verify its mode rather than treating every toolbar icon as protection for every application. ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark have current browser-extension documentation worth comparing, with important differences in operation.
This guide consolidates related Chrome and Firefox buying and setup topics. It focuses on supported desktop browser workflows, not an assumption that the same extension works in every mobile browser. VPNBlade Editorial reviewed the documented features and limitations; we have not run comparative browser speed, streaming or leak benchmarks for this article. The deal buttons show current subscription records, not test scores.
Browser proxy, app controller or full VPN app?
| Configuration | What to check | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Browser-only connection | Which browser traffic the extension routes | Do not infer coverage for a separate mail app, game or sync client. |
| Desktop VPN remote control | Whether the desktop app is installed and connected | The toolbar can control an app-level tunnel rather than supplying a separate browser route. |
| Desktop app without an extension | Its routing rules and any deliberate exceptions | An extension is not automatically required merely because you browse the web. |
Write down the application you need to cover before choosing. Someone checking one website has a different requirement from a person uploading files through a desktop client while joining a video call. If the requirement includes non-browser applications, a browser-only extension does not establish the needed coverage. Our VPN and proxy comparison explains the broader distinction.

Compare included service & terms →Three provider options and their trade-offs
The options below are compared by documented scope and setup, not by a universal fastest or safest ranking. Check the extension and app versions you will use, then compare the subscription’s full payment and renewal. The provider-specific buttons use VPNBlade’s existing offer and affiliate controls.
ExpressVPN: choose deliberately between two extension modes
ExpressVPN’s current extension guide distinguishes Remote Control Mode, which requires its desktop app, from independent Proxy Mode, which covers browser traffic. That distinction is its clearest buying question: do you want toolbar control of the desktop tunnel or a browser-only route? Its guide also directs Edge users to the Chrome Web Store version and warns against an extension claiming to be ExpressVPN in the Edge store.
Reasons to consider it
- The two operating modes are documented
- Desktop-app control can fit an existing full-device workflow
Trade-offs
- The modes have different coverage
- Remote Control Mode requires a supported desktop app
Choose it when: you understand which mode meets the requirement and want to compare that workflow with the desktop subscription you already use.
NordVPN: consider its documented browser-proxy setup
NordVPN’s extension support index identifies proxy-extension guides for Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Its Chrome instructions use the browser store, Nord Account sign-in and a connection control inside the extension. This makes it an option to investigate when the browser route itself is the requirement. Do not transfer a desktop protocol, dedicated-address entitlement or app-level feature into the extension merely because both products use the NordVPN name.
Reasons to consider it
- Separate setup guides cover three major desktop browsers
- Account sign-in and connection steps are documented
Trade-offs
- A proxy extension does not establish coverage for other apps
- Feature availability needs its own extension-specific check
Choose it when: a supported browser-proxy workflow fits your task and you will verify that route instead of assuming desktop feature parity.
Surfshark: consider browser-only coverage with CleanWeb
Surfshark documents extensions for Chrome, Edge and Firefox and distinguishes browser traffic from the rest of the device. It lists CleanWeb ad-blocking among extension features. It also advises against casually connecting both the app and extension at the same time, because that can interfere with the connection. Use its current supported arrangement if you need both rather than assuming two active routes must be better.
Reasons to consider it
- The browser-versus-device boundary is explicit
- CleanWeb is documented for the extension
Trade-offs
- Other device traffic is outside the browser-only route
- App and extension combinations need deliberate configuration
Choose it when: the browser-only scope and its documented additional controls fit, without treating it as a duplicate full-device tunnel.
Install the genuine extension and review its permissions
Start from the provider’s official download route and confirm the store listing’s publisher. A familiar logo or the first search result is not enough to identify the intended product. Read the requested permissions before installation and keep a record of which extension you added. If it is a work or school browser, follow the organization’s approved process rather than trying to bypass a blocked installation.
Google’s desktop Chrome help describes installation from the Chrome Web Store, permission prompts and extension management. It also notes that organizations can block extensions. An instruction labelled Add to Desktop from a phone is not the same as installing that desktop extension into the phone’s browser. Check the actual platform, browser and store route before purchasing on the assumption that installation will be identical everywhere.
A permission request deserves a meaningful decision. Compare it with the function you want and the provider’s documentation. If a request is unclear, stop and ask the provider or administrator instead of granting unrelated permissions to make a warning disappear. Keep the browser updated and remove extensions you no longer use through its normal controls.
Private windows need a separate check
Do not assume an extension runs in every window. Chrome exposes an Allow in incognito setting in its extension details. Mozilla explains that Firefox extensions are not enabled for private browsing by default and that not all extensions can be allowed there. A normal-window connection check therefore does not establish the route used by a private window.
Make the check specific: identify the browser profile, window type, extension and connection state. If you use a private window for a task, confirm that the supported extension is permitted and active there. Private browsing and a VPN also solve different problems; neither means a website cannot recognize an account you choose to sign into.
Verify scope with a small acceptance checklist
- Establish that the chosen website works on the ordinary connection.
- Record whether you are testing a browser proxy, remote control mode or a desktop app.
- Connect through the supported control and make a fresh request in the intended browser profile.
- Check the public exit information and the task you actually need, using the provider’s supported diagnostics.
- Confirm any required non-browser task separately; do not infer its route from the browser result.
- Repeat the intended check after restarting the browser or changing networks.
Our VPN verification guide explains the difference between a connection indicator, a changed public address and broader coverage. A single successful page load cannot prove that every request is protected or that every tracking method has disappeared. Keep your conclusion as narrow as the check you performed.
Keep routing exceptions understandable
A website exception can be useful when a particular service needs the ordinary connection, but it changes the traffic path. Write down the exception and which product enforces it. A browser-level site rule, a desktop app exclusion and a router rule are not interchangeable simply because all are described as bypassing.
Read our split-tunneling guide before adding several overlapping exceptions. If you cannot explain which connection a task should use, simplify the setup and restore one supported baseline. More active extensions can make diagnosis harder without establishing a benefit.
When an extension fails, isolate the layer
Separate a missing toolbar icon, a failed account sign-in, an inability to connect and a website refusing a connected route. Check the current provider instructions for that symptom. If the desktop app is required by the selected mode, confirm it is installed and connected rather than repeatedly reinstalling the browser.
Record the browser version, extension version, app mode, approximate time and exact error. Test one supported change at a time. Do not remove unrelated work settings or disable security software wholesale. If one website fails while ordinary browsing works, describe that distinction to support. Our troubleshooting guide helps organize a concise report.
Free download does not mean free service
A store can let you add an extension without charging at installation while the connection still requires an eligible account. A free plan, a trial and a refund window have different terms. Read the actual account entitlement rather than treating the download button as the complete offer. There is no basis for claiming that every free extension sells data, nor for assuming that a paid price guarantees trustworthy operation.
For ongoing free accounts, compare the documented free-plan limits and verify extension entitlement separately. For paid service, compare the full initial bill, renewal and purchase channel. Choose the smallest commitment that meets the task, particularly while establishing compatibility.
Decide whether you need the extension at all
If a supported desktop VPN app already covers your required traffic and works with your browser, an extra extension may add convenience rather than essential coverage. If you deliberately want a separate browser route, that narrower scope may be the point. Choose on that requirement instead of collecting tools because each advertises privacy.
For a whole-device purchase, compare the Mac guide, Android guide or Chromebook setup guide as appropriate. Check the desktop and mobile requirements separately. The useful outcome is a setup whose coverage, cost and recovery process you understand.
Brave and Edge: choose the app route before assuming extension support
A browser can accept an extension package without every VPN provider promising support for that browser. Brave documents compatibility with nearly all Chromium-compatible extensions and a Chrome Web Store installation route. That is useful browser-side information, but it is not a provider guarantee about every connection mode, login flow or future update. Check both sides before making a purchase for a particular extension.
For example, NordVPN’s current extension support index names Chrome, Firefox and Edge. This guide does not turn that list into a verified Brave-specific product claim. If you want NordVPN while browsing in Brave, compare the supported full-device app for your operating system with the browser-only requirement, and ask support about the exact extension configuration if that narrower route is essential. Installing an app and opening Brave is not the same procedure as installing a browser extension.
| Choice | Question before buying | What to verify after setup |
|---|---|---|
| Supported operating-system VPN app | Does the app support this OS and the required traffic policy? | The intended browser request and any required non-browser task follow the documented route. |
| Explicitly supported browser extension | Does the provider list this browser, mode and account entitlement? | The intended browser profile and window use the selected connection. |
| Extension on another Chromium-based browser | Is installation compatibility also supported by the provider? | Sign-in, permissions and coverage work in the exact supported arrangement; unresolved compatibility stays unresolved. |
For Brave, review the store listing and permission prompt
Brave’s help describes selecting Add to Brave in the Chrome Web Store and reviewing the requested data access. Use the genuine provider listing and read that prompt rather than assuming a familiar logo makes every permission appropriate. The browser’s extension controls also let you inspect details or remove an installation you no longer need. An organization-managed browser may have its own approved process.
Keep the browser version, extension version and exact symptom when asking for support. Separate an unavailable listing from a failed account login or a connection that stops unexpectedly. Do not work around a browser security block with an unrelated extension mirror. If you cannot establish provider support for the extension, a supported app route may be a more maintainable choice for your requirement.
For Edge, follow the provider’s specific installation route
Edge support is already documented for the provider options compared above, but their installation routes are not interchangeable. ExpressVPN directs Edge users to its Chrome Web Store extension, while NordVPN provides an Edge setup guide. Start with that provider-specific route and preserve the mode distinction: a browser proxy does not establish coverage for every program on the machine.
The provider comparisons and deal buttons above apply to the underlying service, not to a separate product called a Brave VPN or Edge VPN unless the provider explicitly sells one. Confirm that your selected plan supplies the required feature. Keep the full bill and renewal alongside compatibility, and do not treat any archived price or claimed fastest-browser result as current evidence.
