For Starlink, choose a VPN around your devices, required routing controls and the kind of connection you need. ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark are useful candidates to compare, but we have not established a measured Starlink performance winner. Ordinary browsing through a VPN client and receiving incoming connections to a home server are different problems. Buying a subscription does not automatically solve both.

VPNBlade reviewed current Starlink and provider documentation on 29 October 2026. We have not performed comparative speed, gaming, streaming-access or reconnection tests on Starlink for this guide. The recommendations below explain documented features and practical purchasing decisions. Offer buttons may earn a commission.

Compare current VPN offers for your device setup

Start with the app or compatible router you intend to use, then compare the total payment, included service period and next renewal. A low monthly equivalent can require a substantial upfront charge. None of these offer cards establishes that a particular setup has been tested on your Starlink kit.

Starlink says VPNs using TCP or UDP are supported, with NAT traversal required. Its compatibility guidance lists OpenVPN and WireGuard among client-to-site protocols that generally work well with CGNAT, while qualifying that configurations differ. This is useful network guidance, not certification that every app, router and account combination will work.

Compare the provider with the requirement you actually have
Provider Reason to shortlist it Important check
ExpressVPN Current subscription tiers permit ten, twelve or fourteen simultaneous connections, depending on the plan Confirm the selected tier and supported app controls; do not assume every device has the same features
NordVPN Ten-device allowance and documented app-routing controls on supported platforms Check the exact operating system; desktop and mobile settings are not interchangeable
Surfshark Unlimited simultaneous VPN connections under its stated household and misuse conditions VPN allowance does not describe every bundled product, and routing scope differs across devices

Someone protecting one laptop may value clear app behavior more than a larger allowance. A household with several phones, televisions and computers has a different requirement. A person who wants a remotely reachable server needs to resolve addressing and inbound access before comparing ordinary VPN offers.

ExpressVPN: reasons to choose it

ExpressVPN’s current plans distinguish Basic, Advanced and Pro connection allowances. Its desktop split-tunneling documentation covers supported Windows, macOS and Linux configurations, while the exact interface and available controls depend on the app. Treat the relevant setup instructions as part of the buying decision.

ExpressVPN pros

  • Plan-specific device allowances can be compared against a clear household device list.
  • Documented desktop routing options may suit someone who needs to separate traffic paths.
  • A defined subscription choice can make it easier to identify which extras you actually need.

ExpressVPN cons and checks

  • Higher-tier capacity or bundled extras are not automatically useful for a single-device requirement.
  • A desktop feature should not be assumed to exist identically on a phone or router.
  • No claim of lower Starlink latency or universal streaming access is established here.

Choose ExpressVPN if the selected plan and supported client fit your devices. Review the ExpressVPN store and current offers after checking the setup you intend to run. There is no need to pay for unused capacity simply because a larger tier exists.

NordVPN: reasons to choose it

NordVPN advertises a ten-device allowance. Its split-tunneling documentation distinguishes supported Windows, Android and Android TV app controls from Linux allowlisting behavior. That difference matters when the same household includes a phone, desktop and specialist network device.

NordVPN pros

  • A ten-device allowance can cover a defined collection of independently connected devices.
  • Supported app-routing controls can help with a specific traffic exception.
  • Platform documentation provides a useful checklist before committing to a longer term.

NordVPN cons and checks

  • A finite device limit requires planning when many devices connect at once.
  • Linux allowlisting should not be confused with the same per-app interface found elsewhere.
  • A nearby server or larger network does not, by itself, prove better performance on your satellite connection.

Choose NordVPN if its supported app and device allowance meet your requirement. The NordVPN deal page separates current purchase options from the feature assessment. If the intended application is managed by your employer, confirm its requirements with the organization before changing the route.

Surfshark: reasons to choose it

Surfshark allows unlimited simultaneous VPN connections under its stated household-use conditions and misuse qualification. On Windows, Bypasser distinguishes excluding apps or websites from routing only chosen apps through the VPN. Its current iOS guide specifies website bypassing rather than a general per-app exclusion feature.

Surfshark pros

  • The household VPN allowance can help when several people use multiple devices.
  • Windows routing choices address different ways to separate traffic.
  • Its iOS documentation states a narrower feature scope rather than implying identical controls everywhere.

Surfshark cons and checks

  • Unlimited VPN connections do not mean every bundled service has unlimited device coverage.
  • Bypassed traffic follows the ordinary connection, changing the protection you have chosen.
  • Feature availability on a laptop should not be copied automatically to a phone.

Choose Surfshark if its household allowance and supported routing controls solve your task. Check the Surfshark store and current plans for the precise bundle. More included products only add value when you will use them.

CGNAT, incoming connections and public addresses

Starlink’s default IPv4 policy uses carrier-grade NAT, or CGNAT, and does not permit unsolicited inbound traffic. Its current documentation limits the public IPv4 option to eligible Local and Global Priority plans and says genuinely static addresses are not offered. Relocation or updates may change the allocation. Public and static are therefore different requirements.

Starlink also says its router does not support port forwarding. Its port-forwarding guidance calls for a suitable third-party router and a public IP on the Starlink service. Do not buy an ordinary consumer VPN expecting it to create an incoming Starlink port automatically. A provider’s own remote-access or forwarding service would be a separate configuration to verify.

This distinction can prevent an expensive wrong purchase. If your goal is ordinary outbound browsing, evaluate the VPN client and app behavior. If the goal is to reach equipment at home from elsewhere, first identify the addressing, firewall and remote-access requirements. A VPN offer that is suitable for browsing may not address the second problem.

Use an app first, or plan a compatible router

Running the provider’s supported app on a laptop or phone gives you a limited initial setup to evaluate. Network-wide routing requires a router that actually supports the intended VPN client and configuration. The archived instruction to enter a server name into a generic Starlink web interface should not be followed as a universal installation method.

Starlink’s third-party-router connection instructions depend on the kit: some need an Ethernet adapter while others provide Ethernet through their power supply. Bypass mode changes which router manages the local network. Check the actual kit and router documentation before buying hardware or changing the working connection.

Our router VPN setup guide covers the compatibility questions, and the router VPN buying guide compares the broader hardware decision. Neither bypass mode nor a new router should be presumed to remove upstream CGNAT.

A troubleshooting worksheet before blaming the VPN

Separate the internet connection from the VPN task
Symptom First question Useful next step
Everything is slow Is ordinary Starlink service affected too? Compare a baseline on the same device or another device without the VPN.
One app fails Does the app have an exception or a required connection method? Check the specific rule before changing several settings.
The Starlink app behaves differently Does the problem appear only while the VPN is active? Check the connection outside the tunnel before concluding that the internet service is down.
A home server is unreachable Are you asking for inbound IPv4 access? Resolve the public-address and router requirements rather than buying from a speed ranking.
A connection drops Did the underlying service or just the VPN disconnect? Record the timing, app state and relevant network observations for support.

Starlink’s slow-speed guidance recommends comparing performance without the VPN, or using another device without it, and distinguishes device-to-router from router-to-internet checks. That helps identify where an issue occurs. It does not establish a universal speed penalty or guarantee that switching providers fixes the underlying connection.

Keep one variable stable while checking another. Record the app, operating system, server selection and task. Our VPN verification checklist can help organize observations without turning this editorial guide into a claim that we tested your equipment.

Choose a plan after checking the real commitment

Compare the complete initial payment, included service period, renewal and applicable refund conditions. These providers qualify their guarantees by transaction and billing channel; do not treat a refund window as a free trial or assume cancellation automatically returns a payment. The VPN cancellation guide explains the distinction.

A suitable starting choice is the service whose supported app fits your device and task. Keep the three-provider comparison available for the wider subscription decision. No VPN can be promised to remove satellite obstructions, prevent every outage or make every online service accept its connection.
