To cancel a VPN subscription, stop automatic renewal with the company or app store that bills you, complete the confirmation steps and save the resulting status or email. A refund is a separate request with its own eligibility rules. Deleting an app, disconnecting a tunnel and deleting an account are different actions.

Start with one sentence: “I want to stop the next renewal,” “I want to request a refund,” or both. That makes an account screen easier to interpret. A button that turns renewal off can achieve the first goal while leaving the second untouched. Google explicitly warns that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription in its subscription guidance.
First identify who actually bills you
Find the original receipt rather than guessing from the device you use today. Buying a subscription on a provider’s website and later installing its iPhone app does not turn that purchase into an Apple subscription. Equally, signing into a provider account does not necessarily transfer an existing app-store subscription to direct billing.
- Search your receipts for the VPN name and the date of the payment.
- Identify the merchant or platform shown on that receipt: the provider, Apple, Google, Amazon or another seller.
- Check which account or email address owns the purchase. A family member’s store account can be different from your VPN login.
- Note the next billing date, paid-through date and exact subscription or bundle name.
- Keep transaction references private and use the official support route when account-specific help is needed.
If you cannot find the subscription in one dashboard, that is a reason to check the billing route, not proof it has disappeared. Checking the receipt first often prevents a loop between the app developer and the store.

How to cancel NordVPN auto-renewal
For a purchase made directly from NordVPN, its current cancellation guide directs you to Nord Account and the Billing area. Select the cancellation control beside auto-renewal, confirm the choice and check that the renewal status changes to off. Nord also describes a confirmation email. Retain it with the account’s relevant dates.
A two-year commitment describes the service you bought; it does not mean that renewal can only be disabled during the first month. The important distinction is between preventing a future payment and seeking repayment for the current term. Open the actual subscription entry, especially if your account contains multiple Nord products or add-ons.
Nord’s refund policy describes a 30-day guarantee for the initial purchase, not an automatic refund whenever you turn renewal off. Contact its support team for the documented refund process. Renewals are excluded under that guarantee, subject to applicable local requirements. Apple, Amazon and reseller purchases have separate routes; Nord’s policy provides specific guidance for Google Play payments. Check the relevant section rather than assuming all stores use the same process.

How to cancel ExpressVPN auto-renewal
For eligible direct purchases, ExpressVPN’s cancellation documentation points to My Subscription. Use the cancellation control under Automatic renewal and finish the prompts. It says cancellation is handled on the website or through the relevant app store, rather than inside the ExpressVPN app. Check the resulting renewal status and service end date.
The same support page distinguishes non-renewing payment routes and explains how app-store subscriptions are managed. Follow the route that matches your receipt. The practical mistake to avoid is treating the payment instrument as the merchant: paying with a card through an app store is still an app-store transaction.
ExpressVPN’s refund support page, updated 14 October 2026, describes its first-time-user guarantee and directs customers to support. Its terms exclude renewal purchases and redemption-code subscriptions from that guarantee and identify further purchase-specific conditions. Apple and Google Play refund requests are handled by those platforms, at their discretion. Do not copy a direct-purchase guarantee onto a store-billed payment.

How to cancel Surfshark auto-renewal
Surfshark’s current cancellation guide describes a self-service option for website purchases. Sign into your Surfshark account, open Subscription from the account menu, select Payments and use Cancel auto-renewal. Complete the confirmation and verify the result. The guide also offers customer support if help is needed.
This corrects a problem in the old archived article, which claimed there was no direct cancellation option and confused the refund deadline with the time available to stop renewal. Current documentation says access continues through the paid billing period after auto-renewal is cancelled. Cancelling renewal does not itself issue a refund for unused time.
Surfshark’s separate refund policy describes eligibility within 30 days of the first purchase, with conditions for purchase route, previous refunds and excluded services or add-ons. It distinguishes Apple and Amazon requests from Google Play handling. Use that policy and your receipt when approaching support; an archived promise of approval within a day is not a current service commitment.
Check the Surfshark store for current offers only when you are considering a new purchase. Keep the cancellation record for the subscription you already own.
Cancelling IPVanish: use the terms attached to your offer
The live IPVanish terms state that auto-renewal may be cancelled through the procedures provided by its support service. They define the refund window by the number of days listed on the signup offer and explain that payment-method restrictions can affect refunds. That is the scope we could verify from its current public legal page.
We could not retrieve the detailed support article during this review because it returned an access-verification page. Consequently, we are not reproducing old dashboard button labels, promising a universal 30-day refund or quoting a fixed processing time. Use the official account and support links from IPVanish’s own site, locate your purchase terms and ask for confirmation of the correct cancellation and refund route.
The archived guide mixed old VPN-plus-storage prices with a broad refund promise. Those prices and assurances have not been restored. If support provides a cancellation confirmation, check which subscription it covers and whether a refund request has also been recorded. Keep that purchase record distinct from any new subscription you may choose later.
Apple and Google Play purchases need store-specific action
On an iPhone, Apple’s documented route starts in Settings, under your name and Subscriptions. Select the subscription and follow its cancellation option. Apple notes that an expiry message or the absence of a cancellation button can indicate it has already been cancelled. Confirm the account and subscription before drawing that conclusion. Its refund request process is separate and does not promise approval for every purchase.
For Google Play, use the Google Account that owns the subscription, open its subscription management area, choose the relevant entry and complete the cancellation instructions. Google generally describes continued access through the paid period. Its guidance also distinguishes payment plans, where stopping a future renewal does not necessarily cancel remaining payments already committed under the current plan.
Refund eligibility is a different question. Read Google’s purchase-refund policy and the provider’s store-specific instructions. A developer may be able to assist with some purchases; that does not mean every developer can override the store’s decision. Check the actual route and purchase date before expecting an outcome.
A five-minute confirmation checklist
- Correct account: the cancellation matches the receipt’s account and merchant.
- Correct product: the selected entry is the VPN plan or bundle you intended to stop.
- Renewal status: the final screen confirms renewal is off or shows the relevant expiry state.
- Dates: you have retained the service end date and the date you completed the request.
- Refund status: a separate request or decision exists if you also asked for repayment.
For example, imagine a household has one website-billed VPN and a second subscription purchased through a phone’s app store. Cancelling the website plan does not establish that the store plan is cancelled. This is a hypothetical billing example, not a report of a particular provider charging twice. The remedy is to reconcile each receipt against its own subscription entry.
A screenshot can be useful evidence, but keep it private if it contains your email, payment information or transaction identifiers. A calendar note is a reminder, not confirmation. If a dashboard still shows the old state, use official support with the purchase reference and ask what remains incomplete. Avoid making repeated replacement purchases while the original status is unresolved.
If you are switching providers, separate the two decisions
Finish the billing task first, then decide whether you need another paid VPN. A different logo or a lower monthly-equivalent headline does not necessarily solve the reason you are leaving. Common cancellation questions
Does uninstalling the VPN stop payments?
No. Treat software removal and billing cancellation as separate tasks. Google explicitly warns about this distinction, and provider-specific cancellation instructions should govern a website purchase.
Can I cancel renewal after the refund window ends?
Do not confuse the two deadlines. Use the applicable renewal-cancellation procedure to prevent the next payment, while checking separately whether any repayment is available. The account’s billing dates and purchase terms determine the relevant timing.
Should I delete my account first?
Resolve the subscription and preserve your receipts and support record before requesting account deletion. Deletion is a separate data-management decision; it is not a reliable substitute for evidence of renewal cancellation or an approved refund.
Will support always offer a discount to stay?
Do not assume it. A retention offer, if shown, is a new decision about price and commitment. Read its terms and check the final subscription status after making your choice. An archived example does not guarantee that the same offer exists today.
