A useful privacy VPN is one whose documented data practices and connection controls match what you need to protect. Start with the scope of its logging policy, the evidence behind that policy and the behavior of the app you will actually use. An encryption label or a large server count cannot answer all three questions.
ExpressVPN, NordVPN and Surfshark are options to compare, with different documentation and practical checks. VPNBlade Editorial reviewed the material described here; we have not conducted independent logging, security or speed tests for this guide. Commercial offers can rotate under the site’s placement settings. They are subscription choices, not a measured privacy ranking.
Quick comparison: what to investigate before subscribing
| Provider | Documented evidence worth reviewing | Decision before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| ExpressVPN | A detailed privacy policy and a trust center separating several types of assessments. | Understand the distinction between VPN activity, account information and optional diagnostics. |
| NordVPN | A no-logs policy explanation and dated assurance announcements. | Read the assessment scope and check the controls available on your exact app. |
| Surfshark | A trust center and a publicly available June 2025 no-logs assurance report. | Read the report’s date, exclusions and data definitions instead of relying on its headline. |
Before comparing the bill, write down a requirement such as “my laptop’s supported apps should use the VPN route, with documented behavior when that connection drops.” That is more actionable than “make everything anonymous.” Our VPN decision guide explains where a personal service can help and where another tool or setting may matter more.
Compare the providers by policy clarity and practical fit
ExpressVPN: consider it when you want a detailed data-category explanation
ExpressVPN’s privacy policy, updated October 2, 2026, says it does not collect VPN activity logs or specified connection logs. It separately describes account information, aggregate usage statistics and optional app diagnostics. Diagnostics are described as opt-in, while account and payment information serve other purposes. Those distinctions make the policy more useful to read than a short no-logs badge.
Its trust center lists assessments of different subjects, including apps, server technology and privacy claims. An app assessment and a privacy-policy assurance engagement do not answer identical questions. Check the report relevant to your concern rather than treating the total number of published assessments as a personal security score.
Reasons to consider it
- The policy explains several data categories separately.
- The trust center distinguishes assessment subjects.
Trade-offs and checks
- A no-activity-logs statement is not an absence of account data.
- Optional services can have their own data arrangements.
Choose it when: you are comfortable with those categories and its supported app meets your connection requirement. Read the plan’s included features and renewal conditions before committing; the presence of additional products does not mean you need to activate them all.
NordVPN: consider it when dated assurance documentation is part of your review
NordVPN’s no-logs explanation describes repeated independent examinations, including a sixth review in 2025. Its account-information support page also acknowledges information needed for sign-in and billing. Keep the distinction between online activity and service administration in view when interpreting the phrase no logs.
A detailed announcement about the 2024 engagement identifies the practitioner, review period and the types of server configuration examined. It directs account holders to the full report. This guide does not claim to have accessed a private account report. The useful buying question is whether the available evidence and your own review satisfy your requirement, rather than assuming an assurance headline proves every future app release.
Reasons to consider it
- Dated assurance announcements provide context for its claims.
- The provider explains account data separately from online activity.
Trade-offs and checks
- The full account report requires its stated access route.
- A server-policy review is not a test of your device configuration.
Choose it when: you want to evaluate that evidence alongside a supported app and can verify the controls you need. Do not buy a bundle simply because an extra feature sounds private; identify what it changes in your own workflow.
Surfshark: consider it when you want to inspect a public assurance report
The publicly available Deloitte report dated June 10, 2025, describes a point-in-time engagement on Surfshark’s IT configuration and supporting operations against its stated no-logging safeguards. It explicitly excludes several subjects, including data-transfer security and parts of its other infrastructure. Its conclusion should be read within those boundaries.
Appendix I distinguishes browsing activity from account information and short-lived connection information. It describes user-ID and connection-time information deleted within 15 minutes after a session ends. That is a dated description from the report, not a claim that we independently monitored today’s systems. This example shows why a privacy review should read the definitions as well as the summary.
Reasons to consider it
- A public report makes its scope and exclusions inspectable.
- Its trust center groups different assessments and explanations.
Trade-offs and checks
- A point-in-time report does not assure every later configuration.
- Different categories of operational data need separate interpretation.
Choose it when: the report’s boundaries, current policy and supported app fit your needs. Compare the underlying VPN service separately from optional security products, and confirm which features your chosen subscription includes.

Compare included service & terms →Read no-logs claims as a set of specific questions
Start by separating traffic activity, connection information, account details, support messages and optional diagnostics. A policy might make different commitments for each. Ask what is collected, why, for how long, and whether the statement refers to VPN transport or another product. Do not turn the absence of one category into a claim that no information exists anywhere.
Then inspect the evidence. A provider’s policy is its commitment; an external assessment has a named scope, date and conclusion. An assessment can provide useful support without becoming a promise about every device, employee action or future update. For an important requirement, keep a short record of the document version and the exact question it answered.
Check the app controls that affect your actual route
Policy review and connection setup solve different parts of the problem. Decide which applications should use the tunnel, which exceptions are intentional, and what should happen when the connection is unavailable. Our split-tunneling guide and kill-switch explanation help turn those choices into a clear requirement.
Confirm the current documentation for your operating system. A feature shown in a desktop screenshot may behave differently on a phone or be absent from a browser extension. Keep an exclusion deliberately documented. If your requirement is whole-device coverage, a successful browser-proxy connection is not enough to establish it.
After setup, use the VPN verification workflow to compare the intended route with the observed result. A changed public address is useful evidence for that request. It does not prove the provider’s retention practices, and a policy document does not prove your particular app has connected. Both questions deserve their own check.
Use a small decision worksheet instead of a universal winner
| Area | Write down | Unresolved question |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Device, apps and intended exceptions. | Does the exact supported app implement that arrangement? |
| Data practices | Policy version and relevant categories. | Are any definitions or retention statements unclear? |
| Evidence | Assessment date, scope and access route. | Does it address the specific concern? |
| Recovery | Disconnect behavior and normal reconnection process. | Can you recognize an unexpected route? |
| Cost | Full initial bill, renewal and refund eligibility. | Is the commitment appropriate while evaluating compatibility? |
For example, imagine a household choosing one provider for two supported operating systems. A strong policy explanation does not resolve a missing app feature on one of those systems. Conversely, a convenient interface does not answer a retention question left unclear in the policy. Resolve the weaker part of the arrangement before extending the subscription term.
Keep other privacy decisions separate from the purchase
A VPN changes a network arrangement. It does not make a website forget an account you deliberately sign into. Browser permissions, cookies, account security and the information you submit remain separate choices. Avoid a plan whose sales pitch requires you to believe one connection setting replaces all of them.
The same caution applies to price. A paid subscription is not proof of every privacy property, and a free service should be judged by its actual policy and limits rather than dismissed as automatically dishonest. If a free plan is appropriate, compare the documented free VPN options. If a personal VPN does not address your requirement, choosing another tool can be the sensible outcome.
Compare the complete bill after the privacy checks
The live provider buttons above use VPNBlade’s existing offer and affiliate settings. Compare the initial payment, service term, renewal and purchase-channel refund rules together. Monthly equivalents help compare a term; they do not mean every long plan is billed monthly. Use the subscription comparison tool for billing details and the provider store for the full offer conditions.
Keep your first commitment proportionate to what you have established. If compatibility or a privacy question remains unresolved, a larger discounted package does not resolve it. Once the evidence, app controls and cost fit your needs, choose the provider whose arrangement you understand and can maintain.

Compare account information and recovery requirements
When evaluating privacy, separate the information needed to operate an account from payment records and traffic activity. Also check how you will retain access details and whether an additional service has its own credentials. A smaller signup form does not establish complete anonymity.
Our dedicated NordVPN versus IVPN comparison covers the documented account differences, current tiers and device allowances, separate pros and cons, and relevant offers. Use it for that pairwise buying decision. The policy and assurance checklist in this guide remains the broader framework for comparing providers.
Check which applications and devices need coverage
Browser-only routing and a device VPN application can serve different requirements. List the applications you actually use before comparing subscriptions, and read device allowances in their own terms rather than treating registration and simultaneous connection as identical measures.
The dedicated Mozilla VPN versus NordVPN comparison explains the separate Firefox feature, supported routing controls, platform restrictions, pros and cons, and current offers. For a wider explanation of coverage boundaries, see our browser-extension guide and VPN verification checklist.
