Start a Surfshark setup by identifying the device’s operating system and the traffic you want to route. A Windows laptop, Android television and PlayStation can all use a VPN connection, but they do not install the same application. Connecting a phone also does not automatically route every television or console in the household.

This guide uses current provider documentation rather than a new installation test. VPNBlade has not installed these apps, measured gaming latency or tested streaming access for this article. For the buying assessment, use our Surfshark review; this page focuses on choosing and checking an installation route.

Use the Surfshark provider and offer record to check the selected subscription and its complete terms.

Choose an installation route before downloading

Device Documented route Important boundary
Windows computer Official Windows application matched to the computer’s architecture A browser extension covers the browser rather than every application
Android phone or tablet Google Play application on Android 7 or later; a separate official APK route for Android 6 Do not copy an old Android 5 requirement
Android TV or box Android TV application; check the operating system and connection type Provider documents an Ethernet exception for Android 9 and 12
Apple TV Native application on tvOS 17 or later The old SmartDNS instructions are obsolete
PlayStation 4 or 5 Compatible VPN router or correctly shared computer VPN connection No native Surfshark application installs directly on the console

A screen marketed as a “smart TV” is not enough information. Find its operating system and model in its settings or manufacturer documentation. Record whether you are configuring the television itself or an attached streaming box. Those are separate devices, and the box may support an app even when the television does not.

Use an active subscription you already own before considering another purchase. Check the account and plan record, not an old coupon screenshot. A visible antivirus or monitoring product inside an app does not prove that the VPN subscription includes that separate product.

Windows: separate the application from a manual profile

Surfshark’s Windows download page lists Windows 10 and 11 and describes x64 and ARM64 support. It also identifies older Windows versions and x86 builds as legacy options with fewer updates or features. An available legacy download is not a recommendation to keep an unsupported operating system. Check the current download requirements for your actual computer before installation.

On your own device, obtain the installer through the official provider download route, select the appropriate architecture, install it and sign in to the intended account. The published setup instructions describe connecting from the app and checking its connection state. Menus can change between versions; use the current app’s labels rather than trying to reproduce every position in an old screenshot.

A connection entered into Windows Settings is a different setup route from installing Surfshark’s application. Do not assume an empty built-in VPN profile already contains the service, account configuration or application features. Our Windows built-in VPN explanation covers that distinction.

Change one setting at a time and record why. Before experimenting with interruption controls, save open work and avoid disrupting an important call. On a managed work computer, obtain approval for another VPN or installer; a personal subscription does not authorize changes to the organization’s access rules.

Android: verify the source and the connection state

Surfshark’s current Android instructions require Android 7 or later for the normal store workflow and describe a separate official APK route for Android 6. Install from the legitimate provider listing, sign in, choose a location and review the operating system’s VPN connection request. Do not install a modified “premium unlocked” package or treat a request from an unrelated application as equivalent.

The useful check is the state after connection. Record the selected location and whether the intended app uses the expected route. Review exclusions if a particular task remains outside it. A phone displaying a VPN symbol does not establish how an unrelated television or another user profile is connected.

Keep a short setup record containing the phone model, system version, app version and the stage that fails. Distinguish installation, account sign-in, connecting and a particular website refusing access. Reinstalling repeatedly without identifying the failing stage can erase useful context while leaving the original problem unexplained.

Android TV: check Ethernet before troubleshooting servers

The provider’s Android TV instructions, updated in October 2026, describe installation through Google Play on Android TV or an Android box running Android 7 or later. They also document that Ethernet connections are not supported on Android TV devices running Android 9 and 12. That is a specific compatibility qualification, not evidence that every television or every wired connection fails.

Check this before cycling through locations or buying another subscription. Record the TV’s operating system and whether its connection is wired or wireless. If that combination is outside the published support conditions, ask the provider about a supported route for the exact device. Do not present an unsupported combination as a successful setup.

The published TV workflow supports account login options including a code from another signed-in device. Keep login codes private and use the account you intended to connect. A television login screen is not a reason to share account credentials in a public help forum.

Apple TV and the retired SmartDNS route

Surfshark’s September 2026 Apple TV instructions describe a native application on tvOS 17 or later, followed by account login, a location choice and the system’s VPN configuration permission. Check the Apple TV hardware and tvOS version before assuming that an older unit can run this application.

The provider states that its SmartDNS feature ceased support on 2 February 2026. Do not follow an old tutorial that asks you to activate it and copy its DNS addresses into the television. For an existing obsolete configuration, identify what was changed and consult the provider’s retirement instructions and the television manufacturer’s network guidance. Avoid a factory reset as an unexplained first step: it can erase unrelated personal settings.

A DNS address change and a VPN tunnel are different network mechanisms. Replacing one DNS address with another does not itself establish a VPN connection. This distinction matters when a guide promises that a television is now protected after changing only its DNS field.

PlayStation: verify the shared route, not only the cable

PlayStation consoles do not natively support the Surfshark application. The provider documents a compatible VPN router and sharing through a computer as alternatives. Its Windows example requires configuring the shared Ethernet connection, not merely plugging a console into any computer that happens to have a VPN app installed.

Use the instructions for the exact sharing method and available adapter. Record which device provides the console’s connection, and confirm that the console is using that route. A successful PlayStation network test demonstrates connectivity; it does not by itself demonstrate the intended VPN path, better latency or permission to access a particular service.

For a router route, first confirm that the model and firmware support the required VPN client configuration. A setting named VPN passthrough is not sufficient evidence. Read our router setup guide before changing household-wide routing. Retain a way to restore the original connection and avoid interrupting other people’s work.

A verification worksheet for the whole household

Question What to record What it does not prove
Which device provides the tunnel? Native app, router or sharing computer That every other household device uses it
Is the intended task included? Location, route checks and relevant exceptions Complete anonymity or malware protection
What happens after disruption? Observed reconnection state and configured failure control Identical behavior on other apps or systems
Can the setup be reversed? Original network settings and a recovery path That a factory reset is necessary

Start with ordinary connectivity, then establish the intended route and finally check the task that matters. Use our VPN verification checklist to distinguish a connected indicator from the evidence you actually need. These are suggested checks, not results VPNBlade claims to have measured on your devices.

A successful setup remains a configuration decision rather than a performance guarantee. Keep the supported installation, account entitlement and route clear, then review it after major updates. If the device cannot use the documented method, resolve that mismatch before committing to a longer subscription.
