Proton VPN is particularly worth investigating if you want to start with an ongoing free plan and decide later whether paid routing features solve a real problem. Its free and paid services are meaningfully different. The sensible question is not simply whether Proton VPN is safe, but whether the plan, app and settings you intend to use match the connection you need.
This review assesses current primary documentation checked on 30 October 2026. It does not report new speed tests, server inspections or a purchase. Provider statements are distinguished from our buying analysis. If your choice is already narrowed to two brands, use the dedicated Proton VPN versus NordVPN or Proton VPN versus ExpressVPN comparison.

Free access is a useful starting point with limits
Proton’s plan documentation lists unlimited data on Free with one simultaneous device connection and a restricted, automatically selected group of countries. VPN Plus increases the connection allowance to ten and adds features including NetShield, Secure Core and split tunneling. This is not a free trial that gives you every paid feature for a short period; it is a distinct continuing plan.
That distinction changes what an evaluation can prove. Free can help you find whether the app installs, your account signs in and an ordinary tunnel suits routine browsing. It cannot establish the performance of a particular paid location or demonstrate a paid routing control you have not enabled. Write separate requirements for basic access and paid-only features so a satisfactory first impression does not become an unsupported conclusion.
Plan and scope checklist
| Need | Documented option | Question before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing basic VPN access | Free with unlimited data and one concurrent connection | Are the restricted location choices acceptable? |
| Several connected devices | Plus allows ten simultaneous connections | How many do you actually need at once? |
| Selective routing | Paid split tunneling on specified platforms | Does the actual app support your exception? |
| Additional server route | Paid Secure Core | Is there a defined reason for this route? |
| Other Proton services | Broader bundles include services beyond VPN Plus | Would you use those services independently? |

Split tunneling is not identical on every computer
Proton documents include and exclude modes for Windows applications and IP addresses. The macOS option is described as experimental, with app exclusions, limitations involving WebKit-based apps, and support for WireGuard and Stealth rather than IKEv2. Linux GUI support is limited to specified official distribution packages, with an optional Debian feature and no support in the unofficial Flatpak version described by that page.
A Mac owner who needs Safari outside the tunnel should pay particular attention to that qualification. The documentation warns that shared networking processes can prevent the intended exclusion or affect other WebKit applications. A Linux owner likewise needs to identify the installed package, not just the distribution name. A tutorial written for one version is not proof of another package’s behavior.
This matters most when a single exception is the reason for buying Plus. Describe the required result first: one app outside the tunnel, only a selected app inside it, or a website exception in a browser. Match that to the supported method. Consult our split-tunneling guide before changing the route, and treat any excluded traffic as deliberately using the ordinary connection.
What Secure Core adds, and what it does not
Proton describes Secure Core as passing traffic through its controlled entry infrastructure before the exit server, intended to reduce exposure if an exit is monitored. The documentation names entry locations in Iceland, Sweden and Switzerland and says not every entry-and-exit combination is supported. It is available on paid plans. These are statements about architecture and supported routes, not results from our own infrastructure examination.
The useful buying question is whether that additional route addresses your requirement enough to justify its operational tradeoffs. More routing choices can mean more settings to understand and another variable when a connection behaves differently. There is no universal rule that enabling every available privacy feature produces the best everyday connection.
Secure Core does not remove the identity you provide when logging in to a website, decide whether a message is a scam or make an unsafe download harmless. A tool can reduce one kind of exposure while leaving other risks untouched. Our explanation of VPN visibility helps separate network routing from account identity before you choose a plan.
Consider the bundle only after the VPN requirement
Proton’s plans page distinguishes VPN Plus from Proton Unlimited and multi-account offerings. If you only need paid VPN features, compare the VPN plan first. If you also need other Proton services, list their requirements separately before choosing a broader subscription. One convenient account is not by itself evidence that the most expensive bundle represents better value.
A useful comparison has three lines: what you need today, what you expect to need during the paid term and what you already receive elsewhere. Put each product on one of those lines. This avoids paying twice for a function or assuming that a bundled service solves a task you have never checked. Reassess the list at renewal instead of renewing from memory.
Pros and limitations
- Pro: An ongoing unlimited-data Free plan offers a way to assess basic access without a paid commitment.
- Pro: Paid plans document ten concurrent connections and optional additional routing controls.
- Pro: Detailed platform documentation exposes limitations that are useful to a careful buyer.
- Limitation: Free does not demonstrate all the locations and functions of a paid plan.
- Limitation: Experimental Mac exclusions and Linux package requirements need particular attention.
- Limitation: A wider Proton bundle is only worthwhile if its additional services match your needs.
Purchase, cancellation and the refund route
Read the total charge and next billing period before subscribing. Proton’s terms require both cancellation and the refund request within thirty days of an initial purchase for the stated refund option. Cash and bank-transfer payments are excluded; the option is limited to once per user, and third-party subscriptions use that intermediary’s policy. Do not substitute cancelling a renewal for explicitly requesting an eligible refund.

Start with Free if its location and single-connection limits fit your basic access requirement. Consider Plus when you can name a paid feature you need and verify its support in your actual app. Choose a broader bundle only after checking the other services separately. For any plan, use the connection verification checklist and revisit your requirements when your devices or subscription change.
