Surfshark is a practical shortlist option for a household that needs more than ten simultaneous VPN connections. NordVPN is a practical shortlist option when its documented Double VPN and platform-specific app controls fit your devices. For a smaller household, the important difference is usually the exact feature you need and the subscription commitment, rather than the largest advertised device allowance.
VPNBlade has not run a comparative speed or streaming test for this article. We compare current provider documentation, explain what its features mean in everyday use and provide current offer blocks for each company. We may earn a commission through qualifying links. That commercial relationship does not establish which service is faster, more private or better at a particular game.

NordVPN versus Surfshark: compare the useful differences
| Buying requirement | NordVPN | Surfshark |
|---|---|---|
| Concurrent VPN connections | Current account allowance: up to ten, with same-server/protocol conditions. | Unlimited simultaneous VPN connections for household use, subject to service terms; this is not an unlimited antivirus allowance. |
| Application routing | Documented app controls on Windows, Android and Android TV. Linux uses port/subnet allowlisting. | Windows Bypasser documents app and website/IP rules. Check the relevant platform’s instructions. |
| iPhone routing requirement | Do not infer iPhone app exclusions from Android instructions. | The iOS Bypasser guide explicitly documents website bypassing, not general per-app exclusions. |
| Two-server routing | Double VPN on supported apps; OpenVPN TCP or UDP may be required to expose the option. | MultiHop offers listed routes and custom entry/exit combinations in supported apps. |
| Initial refund policy | Thirty days for eligible initial purchases; renewals are excluded from that guarantee unless applicable law requires otherwise. | Thirty days for eligible first purchases, with billing-channel and add-on exclusions; the guarantee does not cover renewals. |
Read the table against an actual requirement. If only four devices ever connect, unlimited connections will not make your four connections intrinsically better. If a household regularly connects twelve devices separately, the extra capacity can remove a genuine account-management problem. Similarly, two-server routing is relevant only if you want that route and are willing to configure and evaluate it.
Household device counts: where Surfshark has a clear capacity distinction
NordVPN’s current ten-device allowance supersedes the six-device figure in the old archived comparison. Surfshark documents unlimited simultaneous VPN connections across Starter, One and One+ and describes household sharing. Its support page also qualifies misuse such as unauthorized resale and notes that the unlimited premise does not extend to its antivirus service. Treat this as a household VPN allowance, not a license to operate an unrestricted resale business.
Write down the devices that will use a VPN at the busiest time of day. Include phones, computers, tablets and a TV that remains connected in the background. Do not count a machine that merely has an app installed as if it consumes a connection all day. NordVPN’s support page also explains that simultaneous use of the same server has protocol conditions; the overall account allowance is not a promise that every same-server combination works.
For example, a household with four phones, two laptops, two tablets and a TV has nine concurrent devices. Both can be sensible candidates if their exact apps and terms fit. Add two more independently connected devices and Surfshark’s documented capacity becomes materially relevant. A router changes how a household connects and how failures are diagnosed. Review our VPN router guide before choosing it simply to work around a device count.

Split tunneling: application rules and website rules solve different problems
Surfshark calls its routing control Bypasser. Its Windows guide describes excluding applications and websites/IP addresses, as well as an option that routes only selected applications through the VPN. That distinction is useful if your goal is either “everything except this app” or “only this app.” Record which mode you selected, because confusing the two changes what receives VPN coverage.
NordVPN’s support guide documents application-based split tunneling on Windows, Android and Android TV. On Linux, it instead describes an allowlist for ports and subnets. Matching traffic bypasses the tunnel and kill switch, and the rule is not confined to one named app. A Linux user should therefore compare the actual routing behavior rather than expecting the Android application picker to appear unchanged.
On an iPhone, Surfshark’s current Bypasser guide explicitly describes website exclusions. It does not establish that every installed application can be excluded individually. NordVPN’s Android support likewise does not prove the same feature exists on iOS. If the problem is one banking website, a website rule and an application rule are different tools. If the problem is a local-device connection, a website exclusion may not address it at all.
After configuring a rule, check the intended browser or application rather than only the VPN’s main status icon. Our VPN connection verification guide explains how to investigate the route. The Apple-device buying guide provides more context for households mixing phones, tablets and Macs.
Double VPN versus MultiHop: compare control, not the names
NordVPN documents Double VPN, which routes traffic through two VPN servers. The supported app and selected protocol matter; its guide advises switching to OpenVPN TCP or UDP if Double VPN is not visible. Surfshark’s MultiHop documentation describes listed two-server routes and custom combinations of entry and exit locations on supported apps. Someone who specifically wants to select those two locations should investigate that control directly.
Neither feature creates two independent providers. Both hops remain part of the service you chose, and the account relationship remains. Nor does a second hop make a logged-in website forget your identity. The sensible comparison is whether the route offers a property you need, how easily you can manage it and how it behaves on your network.
A second hop also adds a routing choice to troubleshoot. Establish that an ordinary connection works first, then compare the two-hop setup for your authorized task. This article does not assign either provider a speed advantage from that feature. If a simple one-server connection meets your requirements, a longer feature list is not automatically a reason to enable every option.
NordVPN: pros, cons and reasons to choose it
Pros for the right buyer
- Its current ten-device account allowance can suit a smaller or medium household.
- Double VPN is a documented option for users specifically seeking a two-server route on supported configurations.
- App exclusions are documented on Windows, Android and Android TV.
- The refund policy distinguishes an initial subscription purchase from a renewal, helping you identify the applicable conditions.
Cons and trade-offs
- Ten simultaneous devices may not cover a larger household using separate tunnels on every device.
- Linux port/subnet allowlisting differs from excluding one application and needs careful configuration.
- Feature availability depends on app and protocol, so a general catalogue does not answer every platform question.
- The initial purchase guarantee should not be treated as automatic refund coverage for later renewals.
Choose NordVPN when the supported features solve your actual requirement, your concurrent devices fit and the complete subscription cost is acceptable. It is especially worth considering if Double VPN is a specific requirement and the available route suits you. Read the NordVPN offer conditions before paying. Our separate NordVPN versus ExpressVPN comparison addresses another provider pair without combining the two decisions.
Surfshark: pros, cons and reasons to choose it
Pros for the right buyer
- Its documented household VPN allowance removes a fixed ten-connection ceiling.
- Windows Bypasser provides distinct app and website/IP controls, including routing only selected apps through the tunnel.
- MultiHop gives supported apps a custom entry/exit route option as well as listed routes.
- The iOS guide clearly identifies website bypassing, which helps avoid buying on an inaccurate per-app assumption.
Cons and trade-offs
- Unlimited VPN connections should not be confused with unlimited antivirus use or permission to resell access.
- Website bypassing on iOS does not provide general per-app exclusion.
- The refund policy excludes renewed subscriptions and identifies non-refundable extras and payment-channel conditions.
- Neither the number of connected devices nor MultiHop proves lower game latency or more reliable streaming access.
Choose Surfshark when household capacity or its documented routing controls provide value you will actually use. Keep the core VPN requirement separate from bundled products and add-ons, then compare the actual offer. The Surfshark store page explains available plans; our ExpressVPN versus Surfshark comparison offers a separate alternative if you are still deciding.
Plan value: build a checkout comparison before choosing
The cheapest advertised monthly equivalent is not necessarily the smallest payment. A promotional multi-year subscription can require the whole initial amount at once. Compare like-for-like tiers and commitment periods, including taxes and billing currency. Avoid selecting a longer commitment merely because it makes the arithmetic look attractive.
| Record for each offer | What to check |
|---|---|
| Initial charge | Full amount due today, rather than only the monthly equivalent. |
| Term and bonus months | Exact number of months covered by that payment. |
| Subscription inclusions | Core VPN features versus extras you will use or ignore. |
| Renewal | Next billing interval, renewal amount where disclosed and cancellation method. |
| Refund eligibility | Initial-purchase status, seller, payment channel, deadline and excluded add-ons. |
NordVPN describes a thirty-day guarantee for eligible initial subscriptions and excludes renewals from that policy unless applicable law requires otherwise. Surfshark also limits its guarantee to eligible first purchases, excludes renewals and previous refunds, and identifies non-refundable extras such as anonymous Dedicated IP and Alternative ID services. Apple and Amazon purchases follow those platforms’ refund routes; Google Play and other billing arrangements have their own conditions. Save the terms shown for your purchase and use the appropriate support process.
Turning off auto-renewal and requesting a refund are separate actions. Keep the confirmation for each action you take. Our VPN comparison checklist helps you keep price, platform requirements and practical checks together instead of choosing from a discount badge alone.
Gaming and streaming: what the archive cannot prove today
The old comparison gave speed figures and gaming or streaming winners without a current, reproducible VPNBlade test record. Those figures are not reused. A useful gaming check measures latency, jitter and interruptions for the actual game server, rather than treating a download result as the whole answer. For streaming, a successful connection on one date does not establish permanent access across devices or services.
Check the exact device, app version, protocol and service you need under comparable conditions. Record failures too. A provider feature can be accurately documented while the outcome on your internet connection remains uncertain. Our gaming VPN guide explains the decision factors without turning this comparison into a promise of lower ping.
Common NordVPN versus Surfshark questions
Which fits a household with more than ten connected devices?
Surfshark has the relevant documented capacity distinction: unlimited simultaneous household VPN connections subject to its terms. First confirm all those devices actually need concurrent tunnels and that each required platform is supported.
Does MultiHop make Surfshark automatically better?
No. Its custom route control may be useful if you need to choose entry and exit locations. Evaluate the requirement and your actual connection rather than treating a second hop as a universal quality score.
Which is cheaper?
Use the current offer blocks and compare full charges, included months, plan inclusions and renewals in the same currency. Archived prices do not establish the cheaper purchase today.
