Quick answer: evaluate the Android implementation

For Android, the best VPN choice starts with the app and the phone’s software support. A brand’s desktop feature list does not establish what is available on your handset. NordVPN documents Android support, and other candidates should be checked against their official application requirements before you compare prices.

This is a research-based selection guide. We have not measured Android battery use, reconnection time or throughput for this article. The checks below are a practical way to evaluate a candidate on your own phone rather than relying on a universal winner.

Which VPN should you choose for this use case?

Android comparisons should focus on routing controls, connection persistence and the number of devices sharing the account. A provider can offer an attractive price while still missing a control your particular phone needs. The choices below explain where each documented feature is useful. Confirm the installed app, Android version and any manufacturer-specific background restrictions before committing to a long subscription.

Provider Features that matter here Who should consider it?
NordVPN Android app exclusions · Cross-platform apps · Documented connection controls For documented app-exclusion controls
Surfshark Unlimited VPN connections · Android Bypasser · Android CleanWeb For several Android and household devices
Proton VPN Paid include/exclude modes · Free connection option · Free location-selection limits For include/exclude routing and a free starting point
ExpressVPN Android native app · Tier-based allowance · Separate bundled services For a deliberately chosen mobile subscription tier

NordVPN — For documented app-exclusion controls

Why choose NordVPN?

NordVPN’s Android split-tunneling instructions explain how to exclude selected applications. That is relevant when one trusted app needs the ordinary connection while other activity stays on the VPN route. It makes the app a practical shortlist option for a defined routing need. Keep the exception list short and check which app actually uses which path; an exclusion is an intentional change in coverage, not a bonus that should automatically be enabled.

Pros for this use case

  • Documented Android app exclusions
  • Native app across major device families
  • Dedicated connection-protection guidance

Cons and trade-offs

  • Excluded applications use a different route
  • System VPN settings can change expected behavior

Our buying advice: Choose it when a supported app-exclusion workflow solves a real Android compatibility problem.

Surfshark logo

Surfshark — For several Android and household devices

Why choose Surfshark?

Surfshark is worth comparing when the Android phone is part of a larger household subscription. Its unlimited VPN connection allowance is a concrete difference from plans with a fixed cap. Its feature documentation lists Android support for CleanWeb and Bypasser, but these should be checked against your exact app. Choose the package for the VPN job first. Broader One or One+ products only add value when you need those separate services.

Pros for this use case

  • Unlimited simultaneous VPN allowance
  • Android CleanWeb and Bypasser documented
  • Useful for mixed-device households

Cons and trade-offs

  • Additional products have separate compatibility
  • A wider bundle is not automatically a better phone VPN

Our buying advice: Choose it when connection allowance and supported Android routing controls are more useful than an unnecessarily large security bundle.

Proton VPN logo

Proton VPN — For include/exclude routing and a free starting point

All Proton VPN deals & company details →

Why choose Proton VPN?

Proton’s documentation distinguishes paid Android split tunneling from free access. That creates a useful buying decision: evaluate an ordinary free connection if it fits, then upgrade when the documented routing controls or other paid capabilities are needed. The Android instructions describe include and exclude choices, so consider which default matches your goal. An include-only list can leave newly installed apps outside the tunnel; an exclude list begins from a different expectation.

Pros for this use case

  • Free access can be evaluated before paying
  • Paid Android include/exclude controls documented
  • Clear separation of free and paid capabilities

Cons and trade-offs

  • Split tunneling is a paid feature
  • Free server selection is restricted

Our buying advice: Choose it when its paid routing model fits your apps, or when a limited-feature free connection is enough for the initial task.

ExpressVPN logo

ExpressVPN — For a deliberately chosen mobile subscription tier

All ExpressVPN deals & company details →

Why choose ExpressVPN?

ExpressVPN makes sense to compare when the phone needs a supported mainstream app and the account also serves other devices. Its Basic, Advanced and Express Pro allowances differ, as do the separate tools included in the bundle. Count the devices you actually connect, check the Android setup route, and choose the least complicated tier that satisfies the requirement. Do not assume a higher tier changes every network behavior simply because it contains more products.

Pros for this use case

  • Android support documented
  • Explicit connection allowances by tier
  • VPN and separate bundle products can be evaluated independently

Cons and trade-offs

  • Higher tiers can contain unused extras
  • Exact features should be checked on the installed app

Our buying advice: Choose it when the supported Android setup and the selected tier fit your device count and budget.

Our decision: match the provider to your priorities

Put NordVPN and Proton side by side when app exclusions are a central requirement. Compare Surfshark first when several household devices share the subscription. Consider ExpressVPN when its tier and supported setup match your needs without paying for unnecessary products.

The important distinction is between maintaining a connection and deciding what can happen without it. Android’s system controls and a provider’s own exclusions can interact. Check the current documentation, try a harmless task and verify the intended route. Do not disable a blocking rule simply to make an excluded app work without understanding the trade-off.

Understand connection controls

Android provides capabilities for always-on VPN operation and blocking connections outside the VPN. Their availability and behavior depend on the application and device. Read the app’s documentation and the visible system settings instead of assuming every VPN exposes the same controls.

Blocking ordinary traffic can interrupt applications when a tunnel is unavailable. That may be exactly what you want for one task and inconvenient for another. Consider how you will recover a connection, complete a network sign-in or reach support if a setting behaves unexpectedly.

Compare your three main use cases

Use case Priority Question to ask
Daily mobile browsing Supported app and predictable reconnect behavior What happens when Wi-Fi changes to mobile data?
A specific exit location Location choice in the selected plan Is the required location available on this account?
Several household devices Connection allowance and account management How many devices will be connected at the same time?

Use official installation and support paths

Confirm the publisher in the store listing and begin with the provider’s official download page. Avoid assuming that an app with a familiar logo is the official product. Keep the application updated and review requirements before committing to a plan that outlasts the phone’s supported software.

Some Android settings vary by manufacturer. If a background or battery-management control affects your session, consult the device and provider instructions. Do not change several unrelated settings at once: make a note, adjust one relevant option and observe whether the specific issue changes.

Compare flexibility with prepaid savings

A month-to-month plan can be appropriate while you evaluate the app, even if a longer plan advertises a lower equivalent. The longer subscription requires its full invoice upfront. Include renewal and cancellation in your comparison, and distinguish direct-provider refunds from any app-store purchase conditions.

How to compare Android VPN speed without an invented winner

A historical app list cannot establish the fastest VPN on today’s phone, network and app build. We have not reproduced the archived article’s claimed Android tests, so its winner and numerical implications are not retained as evidence. Instead, compare the tasks that matter to you under reasonably consistent conditions. A large download number does not by itself measure game responsiveness, connection recovery or the experience of a video call.

Your Android comparison record: fill in observations from your own device
Record Keep consistent What it helps distinguish
Ordinary connection and VPN connection Same phone, access network and test destination. The baseline connection from the added route.
Response time and a repeatable task Same application, destination and approximate time. Interactive response from bulk transfer throughput.
Wi-Fi-to-mobile transition Same route policy and blocking settings. Reconnection behavior from a simple connected-state snapshot.
A second nearby VPN location Change one variable and note the server label. A location-specific result from an entire-provider verdict.

Repeat a modest number of checks rather than presenting one successful run as a permanent ranking. Record the app version, selected protocol, connection type and date alongside the result. If a test fails, describe whether the tunnel disconnected, the app stopped responding or only the destination failed. Those are different problems. Our VPN troubleshooting guide helps isolate them, while the gaming guide explains the decision context for interactive play. This is an editorial comparison method, not a set of measurements performed by VPNBlade.

Check Android app identity and profile scope

Use a provider’s current official download path and compare its publisher with the store listing. Old install totals, star counts and a familiar app name do not confirm today’s operator, supported version or privacy practice. A no-cost download is also not proof that every advertised location or routing feature is available on the free account. Compare the plan entitlement and the installed app instead of transferring an old feature list wholesale.

Android’s platform documentation describes a system connection-consent request and one active VPN service per user or profile. Starting another VPN service stops the current service in that profile; installing two VPN apps does not automatically produce a two-hop connection. Google’s Android help also distinguishes a work-profile VPN, which can cover only its associated work apps. A work connection therefore should not be assumed to cover personal apps.

Inspect the named app and relevant profile before buying a replacement to solve an unexplained VPN indicator. Keep managed-work settings under the administrator’s guidance. For personal configuration, our Android VPN controls guide and split-tunneling explanation help distinguish stopping a connection from deliberately excluding an application. Use the free VPN guide when the deciding requirement is an ongoing free tier rather than the introductory price of a paid plan.

Your final decision checklist

  • Supported Android version and official publisher confirmed.
  • Required location and account features documented.
  • Normal browsing and network transitions evaluated on your device.
  • Initial price, currency, renewal and refund scope saved.

Select the least expensive package that meets these requirements. Extra bundled products are only useful if they solve a separate problem you actually have.
