VPN or proxy chooser

Match the approach to your goal, without a promise of anonymity or guaranteed access.

Start with the goal, not the label.

A VPN, proxy and Tor Browser have different scopes and trust assumptions. Some secure proxies encrypt the connection to the proxy, while an ordinary proxy may not. An IP change alone proves neither encryption nor anonymity. A VPN’s actual coverage depends on routing, app design and system exceptions.

Tor Browser uses Tor for its own browsing; it does not automatically cover every app. HTTPS still matters at the destination. Signing into an account identifies you to that service. None of these options makes unsafe downloads, phishing or careless account sharing safe.

Research note: Mozilla and Tor Project documentation checked 3 November 2026. This is an educational decision aid, not a test of your connection or a guarantee of access.
