NordVPN vs Astrill: app controls, device limits and refund differences
Compare NordVPN and Astrill by active-device limits, app filters, connection scope, refund policies, separate pros and cons and current deals.
In this article

NordVPN is worth shortlisting for its documented ten-device allowance, supported routing controls and eligible initial refund window. Astrill is worth investigating when its app filters or connection modes meet a specific requirement and you accept its published final-sale policy. These are different purchase conditions, not minor details to read after payment.
VPNBlade reviewed current provider documentation on 29 October 2026. We have not run comparative speed, streaming or restrictive-network tests for this article. Start with compatibility and the exact subscription conditions. A low monthly equivalent may require a long term paid upfront. For a final-sale service, choose the commitment only after resolving the questions that would otherwise lead you to request a refund.

NordVPN versus Astrill at a glance
| Requirement | NordVPN | Astrill |
|---|---|---|
| Simultaneous connections | Up to ten, with server/protocol qualifications | FAQ specifies five simultaneous devices within one household and one connected router at a time |
| Application routing | Windows, Android and Android TV app controls; Linux Allowlist is different | Application Filter supports all, selected or excluded apps on listed platforms |
| Connection option to investigate | Double VPN is a two-server route on supported configurations | OpenWeb mode and its browser-only versus all-app settings need deliberate selection |
| Purchase risk | Eligible initial thirty-day refund policy with conditions | Published website refund policy says sales are final |
| What is not established here | A universal speed, streaming or access advantage | Guaranteed operation on a particular restrictive network |
Do not confuse installed devices with simultaneous connections, or a list of supported platforms with identical controls. A household can own more devices than it uses together. Equally, one application may require a setting that matters more than the total device allowance.
NordVPN: features and reasons to choose it
NordVPN’s device guide specifies up to ten concurrent devices and describes server/protocol qualifications. That provides more capacity than Astrill’s documented five-device allowance, but capacity alone does not determine app suitability. Count the tunnels your routine actually needs.
Its routing documentation describes app-based controls for Windows, Android and Android TV. Linux uses port or subnet Allowlist rules; matching traffic bypasses the tunnel and kill-switch coverage. This is a materially different control from selecting one application. Double VPN, separately, routes through two servers on supported apps and protocols.
NordVPN pros
- Ten concurrent connections can fit a household exceeding five active devices.
- Documented routing and two-server options provide specific features to assess.
- An eligible initial refund window offers different evaluation conditions from a final-sale policy.
NordVPN cons and checks
- Platform and protocol affect which controls are available.
- Linux Allowlist can affect more traffic than one named application.
- The initial refund policy should not be treated as an unconditional renewal guarantee.
Choose NordVPN if its supported app setup solves your task and the selected offer fits your budget. Read the NordVPN offer conditions. A discount does not establish faster performance or make an unnecessary extra feature valuable.
Astrill: features and reasons to choose it
Astrill’s Application Filter offers all-app, selected-app and excluded-app modes on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. Its Website Filter instead uses domains with OpenWeb or IP ranges with other listed protocols, on supported desktop and router configurations. These scopes should not be treated as interchangeable.
Its interface documentation describes an OpenWeb choice between browsers-only and all-app operation. A browser can therefore appear to use the intended route without proving that every other application does. The mode and filter selection are part of the configuration, not merely a choice of server location.
Astrill pros
- Its app and site filters provide distinct routing controls to investigate.
- Documented browser and all-app modes make the connection scope explicit.
- Detailed interface guidance can help someone who wants to understand and record the selected configuration.
Astrill cons and checks
- Five simultaneous devices and a single active router may constrain a larger setup.
- Its published website policy does not offer a satisfaction refund.
- Conflicting trial information and region-dependent availability need clarification before payment.
Choose Astrill if a specific documented workflow fits your need, you have checked compatibility and you accept the purchase conditions. Review the Astrill store and current offers without assuming a free trial or refundable evaluation period is included.
Why browser-only and all-app modes matter
Imagine you check a website in a browser and then open a separate application. The browser result does not establish that the second app uses the same path. A VPN comparison becomes misleading when a browser observation is presented as a whole-device test.
Before changing settings, write down the intended outcome: all relevant apps through the tunnel, only a named group through it, or one deliberate direct-route exception. Then identify the setting that implements that outcome on the installed app. Keep the list short enough that you can still explain it later.
Astrill’s documented OpenWeb browser selection is particularly relevant to that distinction. NordVPN’s platform-dependent routing rules also need their own review. Our VPN connection-check guide helps separate a visible browser result from observations about other traffic.
Refunds and trial claims can decide this comparison
Astrill’s website refund policy, updated September 2026, states that sales are final. It says purchasing for an incompatible system or encountering an ISP block does not qualify for a refund under that policy. Do not buy on the assumption that a connection failure will make the subscription refundable.
Its FAQ is internally inconsistent about trials: one answer says none are offered, while another mentions a seven-day trial. We therefore do not advertise a guaranteed trial. Obtain clear current eligibility information before relying on one.
NordVPN’s policy describes an eligible initial thirty-day window, normally excluding renewals unless applicable law requires otherwise, with purchase-channel conditions. Keep that separate from stopping auto-renewal. Our cancellation guide explains the practical distinction between ending future billing and requesting a refund.
A requirements worksheet for the pair
| Your requirement | Check | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Six or more active device tunnels | Concurrent limits and any router restriction | A smaller allowance may require changing the setup or buying something different. |
| One app needs a direct route | Platform-specific app or network rules | A broad network exception may affect more than the intended app. |
| All relevant apps should use the VPN | Connection mode and configured filters | A browser-only mode cannot establish that the whole task is covered. |
| Network compatibility is uncertain | Current supported configuration and purchase policy | A final sale creates a different financial commitment from an eligible refund window. |
| A two-server route is required | Supported NordVPN Double VPN configuration | A special connection mode is not automatically the same as two hops. |
This approach avoids awarding points for capabilities you will not use. Someone with three devices and a specific filter requirement can reach a different conclusion from a household with eight independent connections. Both can make a sound decision if their configuration and commitment are clear.
Do not buy a promise of universal access
Astrill’s terms state that some features, protocols or supported devices may be unavailable in a country. That is an important limit on a marketing claim. This comparison does not promise that either provider works on a particular restrictive network, and it does not provide local legal advice.
Likewise, no current Netflix, gaming or numerical speed winner is established here. Account rules, app behavior and network conditions vary. The streaming guide and gaming guide cover questions to investigate without promising a particular outcome.
Common questions
Does unlimited installation mean unlimited active connections?
No. Astrill’s FAQ separates household device use from its five simultaneous connections. Do not expand the word unlimited into an allowance the same document explicitly limits.
Does a special protocol replace other security measures?
No such conclusion follows from a protocol name. Keep software updated, understand the app’s selected route and avoid treating a VPN as proof that a downloaded file or website is trustworthy.
What if the choice is still uncertain?
List the unanswered compatibility and billing questions before choosing a long term. For another distinct pair, read NordVPN versus ExpressVPN or NordVPN versus IVPN. Do not let a countdown or a smaller monthly equivalent substitute for the answers.
Choose an offer after confirming the requirements
Shortlist NordVPN for its documented capacity and supported features, or Astrill for a clearly identified app workflow with understood final-sale conditions. Compare the complete current offer before paying.
