The best VPN for multiple devices is the subscription whose simultaneous-connection allowance, supported apps and account controls fit the devices your household actually uses together. Surfshark documents unlimited simultaneous VPN connections, NordVPN allows up to ten devices, and ExpressVPN’s current Basic, Advanced and Express Pro tiers allow ten, twelve and fourteen respectively. Those are useful differences, but a larger allowance does not establish better speed, stronger privacy or support for an old television.

VPNBlade Editorial checked the official documents on 27 October 2026. This is a source-based buying comparison, not a household performance test. We have not measured the three services on a shared connection or verified every device combination. The live paid offers show recorded subscription terms; their commercial placement does not determine the technical judgments below.

Compare the connection allowance with the app you need

Household VPN shortlist: current documented allowances, not performance rankings
Provider Simultaneous VPN allowance Strong reason to compare Check before buying
ExpressVPN Basic 10;Advanced 12;Express Pro 14 A defined allowance that can match a counted household need The actual tier, app support and separate bundle entitlements
NordVPN Up to 10 devices on one account A straightforward capped account for a household below that limit Same-server/protocol conditions and exact operating-system support
Surfshark Unlimited simultaneous VPN connections under its terms A household with many devices or changing connection needs Unlimited VPN does not mean unlimited antivirus entitlements or every platform feature

Start with the device that is hardest to support, not the largest number in the table. A current phone and laptop may be straightforward, while a particular router, console or television can require a different route. Read the provider’s current app documentation for that model and operating system before paying for a long introductory term.

Count concurrent use rather than everything in a drawer

Installation count and simultaneous use answer different questions. List which devices need an active tunnel during the busiest ordinary period. A hypothetical household might have four phones, two working laptops and one television connected in the evening. That is seven potential concurrent connections, even if it owns several other tablets that are usually switched off. It is an example for planning, not a measurement of a VPNBlade test household.

Add devices that leave home, because a router connection cannot accompany a phone onto mobile data or hotel Wi-Fi. Also identify work-managed equipment: an employer’s required VPN or administrator policy can change what you can configure. Do not count a consumer account as a replacement for corporate remote access. Our VPN decision guide explains when a separate subscription serves a real purpose.

ExpressVPN: choose a tier that matches the counted requirement

The current subscription guide, updated 22 October 2026, lists 10 simultaneous connections for Basic, 12 for Advanced and 14 for Express Pro. The allowance therefore belongs to the selected tier, rather than a single number that applies to every purchase. Separate tools and some region-specific benefits also differ by plan.

That makes it worth investigating when a capped plan fits your household and you can identify which extra products you would use. Count first, then consider the higher tier. Two additional connection slots may be useful to one household and unnecessary to another. Check the supported-device documentation for the actual installation route.

Pros for this use case

  • Clearly documented tier-based VPN connection allowances.
  • Separate device-support information for checking the required apps.
  • A comparison can begin with a smaller tier and a defined device count.

Cons and conditions

  • Higher connection allowances require checking the selected tier.
  • Separate bundle products have their own eligibility and usefulness.
  • A larger plan does not prove better performance on a crowded household network.

Choose it if: its current tier and supported apps match a specific concurrent-device count. Reconsider paying for more extras if a smaller package already meets that requirement.

NordVPN: compare a ten-device account with your busiest period

NordVPN’s account-device guide allows up to 10 devices at once and documents additional conditions when devices connect to the same server through the same protocol. It also explains that a supported router connection uses one account slot. Read those conditions when planning several devices on an identical endpoint; do not assume a connection error necessarily means the overall account limit was reached.

A ten-device cap can be sufficient when the busiest period remains comfortably below it. The practical reason to compare NordVPN is that the boundary is defined and you can check the required apps against its operating-system support list. An unsupported old laptop is a compatibility problem, even when unused connection slots remain.

Pros for this use case

  • A documented account-wide simultaneous-use limit.
  • Explicit same-server conditions and router-slot guidance.
  • Published operating-system support information for a mixed household.

Cons and conditions

  • The fixed limit still matters when several people connect at once.
  • Same-server configuration can require closer attention.
  • Router coverage and native-device apps create different maintenance tasks.

Choose it if: ten concurrent connections fit your actual use and the required platforms are supported. Compare an alternative if routinely managing that cap would become a daily chore.

Surfshark: investigate it when device-count flexibility matters

Surfshark’s simultaneous-connection policy describes unlimited VPN connections across Starter, One and One+ and expressly permits household sharing. It distinguishes Antivirus from that unlimited VPN premise and warns about abusive use such as unauthorized resale. Unlimited is a subscription-policy distinction, not a claim of infinite bandwidth on your home connection.

This is a strong reason to compare it when phones, tablets and other supported devices move in and out of use throughout the week. You can focus on app fit without repeatedly reallocating a small fixed allowance. Still check the relevant platform controls and decide whether separate products in a wider bundle solve a need. The VPN’s device policy does not establish identical features on a phone, browser extension and television.

Pros for this use case

  • Unlimited simultaneous VPN use under the documented terms.
  • Household sharing explicitly addressed in support guidance.
  • Less need to allocate a small fixed connection pool among devices.

Cons and conditions

  • The policy distinguishes VPN use from Antivirus.
  • Unlimited connections do not guarantee every device or app feature.
  • Household broadband capacity and route quality still affect the experience.

Choose it if: changing or numerous household connections make an unrestricted VPN device count useful, and the actual apps meet your requirements. Buy the bundle for the tools you need rather than its longest feature list.

Native apps and a router tunnel solve different problems

Native apps make it easier to see a device’s connection state and choose its own supported location. They also continue to serve a travelling phone or laptop away from home. The trade-off is that each device needs installation, updates and a configuration that its user understands. The Android guide and Apple-device comparison help check platform-specific differences.

A compatible router can provide a shared route for selected home traffic, including a device without a suitable native app. It moves configuration, routing and recovery to the router. It does not make every connected device’s software secure or give it independent VPN-app controls. Confirm that the router supports the required VPN-client setup; VPN passthrough in a product description is not the same feature. Our router setup guide covers that separate implementation task.

A household can combine the two approaches deliberately. Record which devices use the router route and which have a separate native connection, especially when diagnosing local printers, casting or an unexpected public IP. Do not assume that adding layers automatically improves the result. Keep a simple diagram or list of the intended paths before changing several settings.

A shared subscription is not separate identities for everyone

The VPN account is one part of the household’s access setup. Device users still have their own website accounts, browser histories, permissions and stored sessions. A VPN subscription does not create separate streaming entitlements or erase an application’s sign-in identity. It also does not give a parent an automatic view of every device’s activity or replace suitable device-management controls.

Use the provider’s supported account and sign-in methods and decide who maintains the subscription and renewal reminders. On a device you stop using, follow the provider’s current sign-out guidance. For work equipment, keep the administrator’s requirements separate from the household’s purchasing decision. These are account-management considerations, not reasons to assume that a consumer VPN prevents every privacy or malware problem.

Compare the household bill without hiding the commitment

The monthly equivalent in a deal card is useful for comparing an introductory term, but its full upfront amount is the money you pay at checkout. Compare that amount, the service duration and the next billing interval before dividing the price among household members. A low headline equivalent is less useful if the initial commitment is longer than you need.

Any per-device calculation should use a realistic number of devices that benefit, not the largest allowance on the sales page. Dividing the same bill by fourteen does not produce a saving if only three devices use it. Keep optional extras out of the comparison unless you would otherwise purchase a suitable equivalent. Our monthly versus upfront explanation and plan comparison tool show the terms to record.

Try the household’s essential tasks before a long commitment

Use a modest acceptance checklist on the actual devices: sign-in, normal browsing, reconnecting, local-device access and the destinations the household already subscribes to. Change one setting at a time and note which device, network and application had a problem. One television failing to load a programme does not prove that every connection on the account failed.

Check the exact TV platform separately with our Firestick buying guide and TV setup explanation. A successful tunnel does not promise access to every streaming catalogue. If a connection fails, use the troubleshooting guide before purchasing a second subscription. Record the purchase channel too, because cancelling renewal and requesting a refund can be separate processes.

Which provider should your household choose?

Compare Surfshark when avoiding a fixed VPN device count is the main practical benefit. Compare NordVPN when a ten-device account and its supported platforms fit the busiest period. Compare the appropriate ExpressVPN tier when a defined allowance and the available apps match the requirement. These are fit judgments based on current documentation, not a ranking of measured household speeds.

Before deciding, write down the concurrent count, the hardest device to support, the chosen route and the full bill. The provider that meets those requirements with the least unnecessary cost and maintenance is a stronger candidate than one chosen solely because an old article declared it the most secure or fastest. Review the setup again when devices, travel needs or the renewal price change.

Common household buying questions

Does using one account mean every device has the same public IP?

The account’s device allowance and the public exit address are different decisions. Devices may connect through different locations or routes. If a fixed address is necessary for an approved allowlist, check the provider’s actual dedicated-IP product and supported platforms instead of assuming that a shared subscription supplies one. Our dedicated IP explanation covers that separate requirement.

Should I buy a new plan every time I add a device?

First check whether the existing subscription supports the new device and whether it would exceed the concurrent allowance. An occasional tablet may fit without changing plans. A regularly connected additional device may change the busiest-period count. Recheck the account and current terms before purchasing a second overlapping subscription.

Does a router remove every household limit?

It changes where the tunnel is managed and may change account-slot usage, but it does not remove router compatibility, processing capacity or service terms. Devices away from that router still need an appropriate connection of their own. Choose the arrangement you can maintain and verify, rather than treating one router as proof of universal coverage.
