Surfshark vs Hola VPN: household devices, features and value
Compare Surfshark with Hola Free and Premium by household device allowance, Windows and iOS routing, separate pros and cons, refund terms and current Surfshark deals.
In this article

Surfshark is the stronger shortlist for a household that needs a paid VPN across many devices. Hola is a different decision: identify the exact free or Premium product, what it routes and whether resource contribution applies before comparing its price. The two should not be ranked by an old discount percentage or a claim that one works with every streaming service.
VPNBlade reviewed current official documentation on 1 November 2026. We have not performed comparative speed, streaming-access or connection-resilience tests for this article. Our recommendations concern documented capabilities and practical fit. Commercial buttons can earn a commission; they are not evidence of a measured performance winner.
Surfshark versus Hola: feature comparison
| Requirement | Surfshark | Hola |
|---|---|---|
| Household connections | Unlimited simultaneous VPN connections across Starter, One and One+, subject to service-use conditions | FAQ describes Premium membership on ten signed-in devices |
| Windows routing | Bypasser can exclude apps and websites or route selected apps through the VPN | Verify the selected product rather than assuming the same controls |
| iOS exceptions | Current Bypasser supports website bypassing, not general app exclusions | Product scope differs between browser and application offerings |
| Free use | Compare the paid subscription and applicable purchase terms | Limited Free and paid Premium are different choices |
| Peer contribution | The reviewed subscription does not require Hola’s resource-sharing arrangement | Some free products contribute; Premium users are not peers |
For a household, the first useful calculation is the number of devices likely to be connected together. Include the television, an older tablet and a phone left connected while a laptop is in use. Then identify the operating system of each device. A generous allowance does not mean that every platform has identical settings.
Surfshark features and reasons to choose it
Surfshark’s support documentation describes unlimited simultaneous VPN connections and household sharing. It separately qualifies misuse, such as unauthorized resale, and distinguishes the Antivirus service from that VPN allowance. This is useful capacity for an ordinary multi-device household, not permission to resell access or an assertion that every bundled product has unlimited licensing.
The important buying implication is that you can choose based on the tools you need rather than paying for a larger VPN connection tier. Still compare what is included in Starter, One or One+ at checkout. A bundle can add a service you value, but purchasing a larger bundle solely to gain more simultaneous VPN connections would misunderstand the documented allowance.
Surfshark pros
- Its published household VPN allowance removes the need to ration a small fixed number of active connections.
- Windows Bypasser distinguishes excluding traffic from routing only selected applications through the VPN.
- Platform-specific help makes the narrower iOS website-exception scope explicit.
Surfshark cons and checks
- Unlimited VPN connections should not be applied to Antivirus or every other bundled service.
- A Windows routing workflow cannot be assumed to transfer unchanged to an iPhone.
- Refund conditions exclude renewals and certain purchase situations, so the headline window needs context.
Choose Surfshark if those capabilities address a concrete need: several active devices, a supported desktop exception, or a household that wants one VPN subscription. A person using one browser on one machine should consider whether the extra capacity actually matters. Our Surfshark assessment provides the broader single-provider context.
Routing: a Windows exception is not an iOS app rule
The Windows Bypasser guide describes two directions: selected apps or websites can bypass the tunnel, or only chosen applications can use it. The instructions call for reconnecting after selecting the relevant items. Decide which direction matches your requirement before changing a list; the same application’s presence on a list is not enough to explain the resulting route.
Surfshark’s current iOS guide limits Bypasser to website bypassing. It also describes adding sites through a Safari extension. That should not be advertised as a general way to exclude any iPhone application. If you need different treatment for a specific mobile app, confirm a supported solution instead of paying on the assumption that the desktop feature name settles the question.
A useful household exercise is to write one sentence for each exception: which application or site, why it needs another route, and what traffic should remain covered. Remove exceptions that no longer serve a purpose. Our split-tunneling guide explains the distinction between an intentional bypass and a routing result you did not expect.
Hola features and reasons to consider it
Hola distinguishes limited Free use from Premium and identifies exceptions to peer participation for particular browser and app products. Premium requires the account to be signed in for its membership benefits. Do not treat the name Hola alone as a complete description of a device’s traffic coverage or contribution settings.
For contributing products, Hola’s Bright Data explanation describes spare resources and the IP address supporting public-web indexing, possible background operation after closing the application, and an opt-out. These are the provider’s descriptions, not our independent verification of its safeguards. Whether that arrangement suits a shared household connection is a decision to make before installation.
Hola pros
- A limited free offering may suit a narrow browsing requirement where its conditions are acceptable.
- Its product range permits a browser-focused choice when broader application coverage is unnecessary.
- Premium provides a documented option for people who do not wish to participate as peers.
Hola cons and checks
- Free, Premium and individual product versions require careful separation.
- Resource contribution may be unsuitable for a shared or managed connection.
- A browser-based result should not be assumed to describe unrelated applications.
Consider Hola only after you can explain the selected product’s purpose and boundaries. A free browsing tool and a paid household VPN may solve different tasks. See the Hola assessment rather than assuming a favorable result for one task establishes suitability for everything else.
Privacy: distinguish routing from identity
Hola’s English privacy policy describes IP addresses, account and billing information, log data and possible extension browsing history. This is not a basis for claiming that a particular customer experienced misuse; it is a reason to assess the disclosed categories and permissions. We have not audited either provider’s internal handling of traffic.
On a shared device, separate the VPN decision from the browser account and saved website sessions. A different network route does not sign a person out of a shopping account or remove identifying cookies. Nor does adding more household devices make each device’s configuration correct. Use the VPN verification checklist to organize checks for each intended setup.
Price, renewal and refund terms
| Condition | Surfshark | Hola |
|---|---|---|
| Initial cost | Check the bundle, full upfront bill and covered period | Identify the precise Free or Premium product first |
| Refund window | Thirty days for an eligible initial purchase; conditions apply | Help describes unused Premium eligibility within fourteen days |
| Important exclusions | Renewals, previous refunds and non-refundable options are excluded by the reviewed help | Unused-service wording is not an unconditional testing period |
| Billing route | Store and authorized billing-partner procedures differ | Cancel through the seller responsible for the subscription |
Surfshark directs Apple and Amazon store refund requests to those platforms; Google Play and eligible billing partners have their own procedures. Hola’s help separates cancelling future payments from requesting money back. Save the receipt and applicable conditions. Removing the software is not a reliable substitute for cancelling a recurring subscription.

Which is the better fit?
Shortlist Surfshark for an ordinary household needing a paid VPN across many supported devices, especially where the documented Windows controls are useful. Consider Hola for a specific product-level task only after accepting its scope, privacy and resource terms. There is no universal winner for every person, device or network.
If your real shortlist involves another paid VPN, use the dedicated Proton VPN versus Surfshark comparison. Keep this Surfshark–Hola pairing separate: deciding whether a product model fits is a different question from comparing two paid household subscriptions.
