For ExpressVPN versus NordVPN torrenting, compare the desktop connection controls, the route used by your torrent client and whether you need inbound port forwarding. NordVPN now documents P2P support on all standard servers, so the old requirement to find its separate P2P category is outdated for the app versions covered by that change. ExpressVPN provides desktop app routing and different kill-switch modes. Neither an old speed table nor a large discount establishes which works better on your connection.

This is a focused comparison for lawful file sharing, such as distributing open-source software or files you have permission to share. It is separate from our general NordVPN versus ExpressVPN subscription comparison. VPNBlade has not run a torrenting speed or leak test for this article. We reviewed current provider and client documentation; no archive test result is presented as our own.

The differences that matter for a torrent client

Documented controls and their practical limits, checked 29 October 2026
Requirement NordVPN ExpressVPN
P2P server selection Current support documentation says all standard servers support P2P; the dedicated category was removed in specified app versions. This review does not establish a current location-by-location P2P entitlement; confirm your intended use and location with the provider.
Desktop routing Windows app controls; Linux uses port/subnet Allowlist rules that bypass VPN and kill-switch coverage. Desktop split-tunneling documentation covers Windows, Mac and Linux; controls differ between editions.
Connection interruption Internet/App Kill Switch behavior varies by platform and app edition. Standard Internet Kill Switch and an advanced desktop mode have different disconnected-state behavior.
Incoming connections Its current open-ports support page states that VPN port forwarding is not provided. Its documented router forwarding is outside the VPN tunnel and has no VPN protection.
Evidence this article supplies Current documented configuration distinctions; no measured throughput, seeding ratio or anonymity guarantee.

The incoming-connection row is easy to misread. A router administration screen labelled port forwarding does not by itself mean that peers can reach you through a forwarded VPN-server port. Ask where the exposed connection exits and which address other peers see. That question matters more than the presence of the label.

NordVPN: P2P support and the old server-list problem

NordVPN’s current support page explains that P2P functionality was integrated into standard servers. It identifies the change from iOS and Android version 9.0.0, Windows 8.0.0 and macOS 10.0.0. The missing separate P2P section therefore need not indicate a broken subscription. Check your app version before following an old screenshot-based tutorial.

This corrects the archived comparison’s claim that P2P was unavailable on some NordVPN servers. It does not establish that every specialty feature or protocol behaves identically. The support statement concerns standard servers and is a provider statement about support, not our independent performance result.

NordVPN pros for this use case

  • The current standard-server guidance removes an outdated category-selection step.
  • Documented Windows app controls and Linux routing details let you investigate the actual client path.
  • Platform-specific kill-switch documentation provides a concrete configuration checklist.

NordVPN cons and checks

  • The support page states that VPN port forwarding is not available.
  • Linux Allowlist is broader than excluding one named application.
  • A SOCKS5 setup must not be mistaken for the same encrypted tunnel as the VPN app.

Choose NordVPN when its supported desktop workflow meets your needs and a forwarded inbound VPN port is not essential. Before purchase, write down your operating system, torrent client and desired behavior when disconnected. Review the NordVPN deals and conditions alongside that requirement list.

ExpressVPN: distinguish normal and advanced connection blocking

ExpressVPN’s current desktop guidance describes an Internet Kill Switch that is enabled by default and blocks traffic following an unexpected VPN interruption. It also explains that deliberate disconnection does not trigger the same standard blocking behavior. Its advanced desktop mode can instead require an active VPN for internet access. Choose the intended mode explicitly and verify it on your installed app.

Its desktop routing documentation covers Windows, Mac and Linux. That makes it relevant when you want a torrent client and other applications to follow different routes. A routing rule is only useful if it sends the file-sharing client through the intended connection; excluding that client from the VPN would defeat that requirement.

ExpressVPN pros for this use case

  • The documented desktop routing options provide a specific feature to investigate on a Mac or Linux computer.
  • Its desktop documentation distinguishes standard interruption protection from an always-on blocking choice.
  • The router forwarding documentation explicitly identifies where that traffic goes.

ExpressVPN cons and checks

  • Do not assume a normal kill switch blocks internet traffic after every deliberate disconnect.
  • Router forwarding outside the tunnel does not satisfy a requirement for VPN-protected inbound forwarding.
  • This article verifies no particular P2P server-location entitlement or download-speed advantage.

Choose ExpressVPN when its supported desktop routing and connection-blocking workflow meet your requirements after checking the intended P2P use with the provider. This review does not turn archived server claims into a current P2P support matrix. The ExpressVPN offer page is a starting point for the current subscription conditions.

Port forwarding: a different question from downloading

Downloading from peers and accepting new unsolicited inbound connections are different capabilities. A torrent client can make outbound connections even when a provider does not supply an inbound forwarded VPN port. Whether that arrangement meets your seeding needs depends on the swarm, client and any tracker requirements. No universal speed or ratio result follows from the feature’s absence.

NordVPN’s open-ports page distinguishes outgoing ports from incoming forwarding. ExpressVPN’s router guide specifically warns that its forwarded ports operate outside the VPN tunnel. Do not apply that router procedure hoping to obtain a VPN exit-server listening port. It solves a different network problem.

If inbound VPN forwarding is non-negotiable, treat that as a separate selection requirement rather than buying either service on a generic torrenting recommendation. Our torrenting VPN guide explains the broader buying questions. Confirm the exact supported platform and configuration of any alternative before paying.

A VPN app, SOCKS5 proxy and client binding are different

The archive moved from comparing VPN subscriptions to a SOCKS5 configuration without explaining the change in protection. NordVPN’s support materials distinguish proxy routing from a VPN tunnel and provide separate proxy setup guides. A SOCKS5 connection does not supply the VPN app’s tunnel encryption simply because it uses the same account’s service credentials.

A browser extension also does not demonstrate the route used by a standalone desktop torrent client. Start from the app whose traffic you need to control and follow the supported configuration for that app and operating system. Do not copy an old hostname, password field or proxy checkbox list without current documentation.

Some clients expose their own interface-selection controls. qBittorrent’s project documentation lists a Network interface option, with Any interface as its default, and explains that it can limit the interfaces used for sending and receiving. This is a client setting, separate from the VPN’s kill switch. Check the interface created by your actual app and protocol; this article does not prescribe a universal adapter name.

Build a short acceptance checklist

Checks to perform on a permitted test transfer
Stage What to record Why it matters
Before transfer OS, VPN app version, protocol, torrent-client version and selected interface Makes your setup reproducible when asking support.
While connected The intended client route and whether the permitted transfer works A browser IP result alone does not establish the torrent client’s path.
On reconnection Whether the client stays on the intended route after your normal network changes An interface or address can change when configuration changes.
On interruption Whether traffic stops as your selected protection mode intends The feature name alone does not verify the observed behavior.
Before renewal Billing party, initial total, renewal amount and applicable deadlines Connection quality and a subscription’s later cost are separate decisions.

Use only a file you are permitted to distribute, pause other transfers and keep the test limited to your own equipment. Record observations rather than turning an app’s green connection indicator into a promise of anonymity. If a result is unclear, pause the transfer and ask support about the exact combination of software and settings.

Our VPN connection-check guide helps separate observations from assumptions, and the troubleshooting guide provides a method for changing one variable at a time. A VPN does not determine whether a downloaded file is trustworthy or whether you have permission to share it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a missing NordVPN P2P category mean torrenting stopped working?

Not necessarily. Current NordVPN documentation explains the category’s removal as part of standard-server P2P support in specified app versions. Check the current app and support information rather than an archived server list.

Which provider is faster for torrents?

We have not run a current controlled comparison. The old article’s Mbps figures have no reusable test record here and are not retained. A meaningful evaluation needs a consistent lawful file, client, protocol, route, baseline and repeated observations.

Can a VPN make all file sharing anonymous?

No universal anonymity claim follows from a subscription. Accounts, client configuration, chosen exclusions, devices and the recipients of your files all matter. Neither a proxy checkbox nor a VPN connection changes ownership of the content.
